When choosing your route, make sure it’s appropriate for your fitness level. Check to see if the restaurants and cafes you plan to visit along the way are open. Pack your fully charged cell phone and maps in your backpack. For cross-border trips, please always carry a passport or ID card with you.

Sturdy shoes, functional clothing, sun and rain protection, maps, trekking poles if needed, first-aid kit (blister bandages), and plenty of food (snacks, granola bars, fruit, water).

The world’s longest wooden ladder gives this hiking trail its name. The trail winds through a place where faith and superstition have long intertwined in local folklore. In the Waldviertel region, it was said that spinning would attract certain spirit beings, such as the Gaude or the Pelzweiberl. The most recent story is that of Hanni, the ghost spinner. You, too, might get the feeling that the old crafts here—in this rugged region and during these turbulent times—are the perfect backdrop for stories, and who knows—maybe you’ll even meet Hanni herself… The trail takes you from the Crafts Museum on a 5-kilometer route up to the Lampelhöh and through the Strichwald. Afterward, you’ll reach the Goldspinnerlichtung, the Teichleiten, and the Zettsteinfeld. Be sure to enjoy the breathtaking views along the way! The trail now takes you past the Proneggmühle. Via the Marterlsteig, you’ll reach the Lamplhöh again, and from there you’ll return to the Crafts Museum.
