A particularly beautiful tour in the center of the Waldviertel. Through the typically hilly natural landscape, across the Allentsteig military training area, past the Kamp reservoirs and castles.
This tour, right in the heart of the Waldviertel, mostly leads along traffic-calmed and well-paved roads. However, you also ride 800 meters over the paved tank road via the Allentsteig military training area, which you perceive more as a bumpy track on a racing bike. From the lowest point of the route in Krumau am Kamp, you cycle 13 kilometers upstream along the Kamp until you see the dam wall of the Ottenstein reservoir in front of you. This section of the route offers views of Krumlov Castle, passes the Dobra reservoir with the ruins of Dobra Castle and numerous photo opportunities. The Kamp accompanies this route for a total of 40 kilometers to Zwettl and offers a wonderful natural backdrop. On this beautiful but also challenging 103 km route, there are also 1,340 meters of altitude to overcome. However, the effort is rewarded with great impressions and views.
When choosing your route, make sure it’s appropriate for your fitness level. Bring your cell phone, bike computer, or maps for navigation. When riding on narrow roads and farm roads, stay focused and anticipate what’s ahead, as you can expect oncoming traffic (from farm machinery) or wildlife crossing the road (especially in forests and fields) at any time. Maintain sufficient distance within the group to avoid pileups during braking maneuvers.
The road bike tours are not signposted. We recommend using the GPX track for navigation.
This tour is suitable for all types of bicycles. A helmet should be part of every cyclist’s standard safety gear anyway. Dress appropriately for the season and weather (protection from rain and sun). Bring a first-aid kit, an e-card, plenty of snacks (drinks, granola bars, fruit, etc.), and tools and supplies for minor repairs (mini-tool, inner tube, tire levers, air pump). GPS bike computer.

Photo Spots: In Krumau am Kamp, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Krumau Castle from the Kamp Bridge.
If you have time, you can also visit Zwettl Abbey. Not only is the abbey church itself worth seeing, but so are the monastery’s inner courtyard with its fountain, the cloister, and the other grounds.
In the district town of Zwettl, a quick stop at the main square is recommended. Several restaurants with outdoor seating invite you to stop for a bite to eat. The city center offers beautiful photo opportunities, such as the Hundertwasser Fountain, the Old Town Hall, the preserved sections of the city wall, the Baroque plague column on Trinity Square, and much more.
