Hiking tour Starting from Lengenfeld Municipal Office
The parish church dedicated to St. Pancratius originated from a castle chapel. The first documented mention of the village (1133/38) seems to have marked the beginning of more intensive settlement. As there was no space for further development on the church hill, the settlement began to develop along the Bachsenke. Prangerplatz emerged as a further focal point with the acquisition of the district court (around 1602). At that time, the old market fortifications probably already existed, the remains of which are still preserved today in the so-called Biritor. The town and the castle in particular are closely linked to the history of modern art in Austria. The Hauer-Fruhmann family of artists acquired Lengenfeld Castle in 1970 and turned it into a center of modern art.
The wine cellar lanes typical of the wine-growing regions should not be forgotten. The two largest are Dornergasse and Heiligengasse (actually Johannesgasse). Others include Annagasse, Kollerweg and Mühlfeldgasse.
The starting point is the town hall. Follow the arrows through a narrow alley, then turn left and walk along the Sirnitzbach stream. After about 700 m, you’ll see Lengenfeld Castle ahead of you. Turn right onto Röhrbrunngasse; immediately after that, the path turns left, past the “Kapelle im Letten,” and leads to the fire station. Walk past the fire station and follow the path that leads steeply uphill through the golf course (be careful!). At the top of the hill, follow the arrows to the left. Now begins a leisurely hike along the golf course and the “Sand” and “Fuchsloch” vineyards. After about 1,000 m, you’ll cross the municipal border into Langenlois; after another 1,000 m, a trail coming from Langenlois joins this one. Now follow the trail to the left, continuing past the outer edges of the golf course. After about 500 m, the trail leads through a forest. Now follow the arrows again. The path descends steeply down the Auberg, back to the fire station, and continues into Röhrbrunngasse. Either walk through the village, past the castle and the statue of St. Nepomuk, where you’ll turn left onto Langenloiserstraße, or follow the stream back to the town.
