Hiking tour Starting from Windigsteig Marketplace
Tranquil forests, gentle hills and fresh water invite you to explore the landscape in the market town of Windigsteig. On foot, by bike or on horseback - the well-developed network of paths opens up the landscape to visitors and provides a memorable vacation experience. The scenic attractions trigger positive moods through their unobtrusive tranquillity and idyllic beauty; they provide strength and energy. Everyone can find their own personal bliss in nature here. With their cultural, educational, health and sporting activities, many clubs form the backbone of the community. Themed hiking trails of various lengths meet all requirements. Colorful windmills (an initiative of the tourism association) are eye-catchers at cultural monuments or direct marketers. Hikers can follow in the footsteps of former pilgrims along the Capuchin Way of the Cross via a footpath link from the district town of Waidhofen to the ruins of the old pilgrimage church of Maria Rafings.
From the market square, head toward the village of Willings, where you can visit the bee garden and a small beekeeping museum. The trail continues past a fallow deer enclosure to a lookout point, where you can enjoy a wonderful view over Windigsteig all the way to the district capital, Waidhofen/Thaya. In Waldberg, you can play “Fuchs und Henne,” “Mühlfahren,” and other games on oversized game boards near the fire station. You can also take a detour onto the forest and meadow nature trail (marked with a red hare). In Waldberg, at the Schmankerlhof Dangl, you can enjoy various regional specialties. The route continues toward Rafings, where you should definitely visit the Pipe Museum. The trail then takes you back to Windigsteig via the pilgrimage chapel on Rafingsberg (advance registration is requested for the Pipe Museum and the bee garden).
