Hiking tour Starting from Lengenfeld Municipal Office
The parish church dedicated to St. Pancratius originated from a castle chapel. The first documented mention of the village (1133/38) seems to have marked the beginning of more intensive settlement. As there was no space for further development on the church hill, the settlement began to develop along the Bachsenke. Prangerplatz emerged as a further focal point with the acquisition of the district court (around 1602). At that time, the old market fortifications probably already existed, the remains of which are still preserved today in the so-called Biritor. The town and the castle in particular are closely linked to the history of modern art in Austria. The Hauer-Fruhmann family of artists acquired Lengenfeld Castle in 1970 and turned it into a center of modern art.
The wine cellar lanes typical of the wine-growing regions should not be forgotten. The two largest are Dornergasse and Heiligengasse (actually Johannesgasse). Others include Annagasse, Kollerweg and Mühlfeldgasse.
The starting point is the town hall. The trail leads past the town’s event hall via several flights of stairs. From here, a steep path—known as the Wirtshausgraben—leads up to the Schickenberg. Passing a small children’s playground and the “Josefi Marterl,” the trail now heads toward “Bieglberg.” At the Wasserstube (agricultural water reservoir), follow the arrows to the right.
After about 1,500 m, you’ll reach a road with little traffic. Turn right, walk along the road, and then turn right again into a forest. This trail is also marked as a horseback riding and hiking trail. After about 500 m, you’ll emerge from the forest, cross a road (the Langenlois bypass), and enter another forest (Riede Spießberg). After about 1,000 m, walk along the edge of the forest, slightly downhill through fields and meadows. After another 1,000 m, you’ll reach the road again; cross it and continue following the path until you reach the main road (Langenloiserstraße). Turn right and walk through the village, past several wine cellars, Lengenfeld Castle, and the statue of Saint Nepomuk, back to the municipal office.
