Hiking tour Starting from Gars Information Center
From the information center in Gars, walk to the Thunau district and follow Gföhler Straße and Schimmelsprunggasse, then follow the trail markers beneath the rock cliffs to Hallmarterl. Here, turn right and hike up to the Wachtberg. On the Wachtberg, you’ll see landscape installations that blend into the natural surroundings and, in some cases, have become overgrown with vegetation. From the Wachtberg, hike to Tautendorf (434 m), where the parish church (built in 1785) features a Baroque “fisherman’s pulpit.” You can stop for a bite to eat at the Zehethofer and Steiner inns. For the return trip, you can choose between two routes:
23: Follow the trail markers (14 km) and walk about 1 km along the road toward Gars. Then turn right and walk through the forest to the archaeological site of the Schanze and the Holzwiese. Systematic excavations have been taking place there since 1965. In 1986, the foundations of the earliest Christian church north of the Danube were discovered. If you continue along the trail, you’ll reach a beautiful lookout point at the edge of the Schimmelsprung cliffs. From there, walk downhill to Goldberggasse in Thunau and back to Gars.
23a: Return route via Wolfshof (17 km): Follow trail marker 23a and walk about 1 km along the road toward St. Leonhard, then over the Schmalhoferbigl to Wolfshof. There, you’ll continue along the marked trail 23a at first, then return through the Taborberg forest to Thunau and Gars.
