Cycling tour Starting from Waidhofen on the Thaya
Waidhofen an der Thaya - Windigsteig - Göpfritz an der Wild
Waidhofen an der Thaya - Windigsteig - Göpfritz an der Wild
Approx. 22 kilometers (96% asphalt, medium gradients): For the most part runs on little-used freight paths and country roads. Up to Windigsteig, this section runs together with the Kamp-Thaya-March cycle route.
During the Thayarunde’s winter closure (approximately November through March), maintenance and upkeep work is carried out on a regular basis. This may result in temporary closures of individual sections of the trail. For your own safety, please be sure to observe these closures.
In Waidhofen an der Thaya, you have the choice of taking the Thaya Loop—that is, following the “Thayarunde” signs—or taking the direct, shorter route via the train station to Jasnitz, following the “Thayarunde-Süd” signs. From Jasnitz, you’ll follow dirt roads back to the railroad tracks heading toward Schwarzenau, and after a short ride along the Kamp-Thaya Bike Route, you’ll reach Wohlfahrts and Vestenpoppen. As you pass through the town, you’ll see one of the typical wooden bell towers, and after crossing the Thaya, turn right and follow Mühlenweg to Meires. The charming moated castle is now owned by the renowned and award-winning filmmaker Michael Haneke. Now turn right and cross the Thaya River; after the bridge, turn onto the paved dirt road and follow the trail markers. After the hill, turn left toward Windigsteig, cross the Thaya River again, and you’ll see the Windigsteig train station ahead of you. You’ll now ride into the village and arrive at the main square. A refreshing fountain and a 17th-century pillory offer a welcome opportunity for a short rest.
You’ll leave the village and head toward Waldberg. The Schmankerlhof Dangl offers a variety of pork dishes and, on some weekends, a wine tavern. The beautiful sandstone statue depicts St. Felix. You’ll ride along the state road toward Weinpolz. At the intersection with the B5, turn right and ride about 200 meters on the federal highway, then leave it before the end of town and turn left. The paved dirt road now leads you on a gentle incline to Georgenberg, after which you’ll pass through a small wooded area. After 400 meters, you’ll reach the Breitenfeld bike intersection. Turn right and ride 5 kilometers along the former railroad right-of-way—completely flat—to Göpfritz an der Wild. The lovingly designed Göpfritz model train station, the fire department museum, and the newly renovated Art Deco chapel are other places worth visiting.
