Von den Fuchsenhöhlen bis zur Wolfsgrube

When choosing your route, make sure it’s appropriate for your fitness level. Check to see if the restaurants and cafes you plan to visit along the way are open. Pack your fully charged cell phone and maps in your backpack. For cross-border trips, please always carry a passport or ID card with you.

Sturdy shoes, functional clothing, sun and rain protection, maps, trekking poles if needed, first-aid kit (blister bandages), and plenty of food (snacks, granola bars, fruit, water).

You’ll start your hike at the information board in Großhaselbach, heading south. Passing the town hall and the parish church, follow the road to the pond. From there, continue straight ahead to an industrial area, where you’ll turn right. The paved path leads you to a forest trail and a fork in the road, where you keep to the right. Follow the trail to a steep forest slope (where foxes love to build their dens), which ends at a hedge fence. Cross the ditch via the footbridge and climb up the slope. Once at the top, you’ll come to a forest road that leads you to the edge of the forest. Follow the path into the village of Ganz, past the houses, and out of the village again. The middle of the three dirt roads ahead of you continues your hike. Near the forest is the Wolfsgrube, where wolves were actually once trapped. The trail takes you straight ahead to the edge of the forest, which you follow as it curves to the left. You’ll pass through a slight dip toward Reinsbachhöhe, where you’ll turn left onto a paved path. At the hunting blind, turn right and follow a meadow path. You’ll come to the Großhaselbach–Allentsteig road and follow it to the left for a short distance. At the next dirt road, turn right, pass a statue of the Holy Trinity, and hike back behind Großhaselbach to the starting point.

Vienna: A 22 – Stockerau – B4 to Horn – B2 to Brunn an der Wild – turn left onto the B32 to Winkel, then turn right onto the L56 to Großhaselbach.

Linz: A 7 toward Freistadt – B 310 to Freistadt – B 38 to Karlstift; turn right there and continue to Zwettl – in Zwettl, take the B 36 toward Gmünd – at Gerotten, turn onto the L 67 and continue to Großhaselbach.
