The almost 100 km long cycle path connects six formerly important towns in the border region between Prague and Vienna. In the Znojmo region these are Znojmo (Znaim) and Vranov (Frain), in the Retz region Retz, Hardegg, Pulkau and Schrattenthal. Each of these towns has a wealth of cultural and historical buildings. Cycle past castles, palaces and churches.

The wine town of Retz is the starting point of your tour. Retz enchants visitors with its wonderful main square, majestic buildings, winding alleys, and medieval city walls, beyond which lie the fertile expanses of the Weinviertel. The entire town is crisscrossed by cellars; the network of underground tunnels is denser than the above-ground road network. The route continues through the picturesque Retz countryside to Schrattenthal. Schrattenthal, Austria’s smallest wine town, captivates with a high concentration of exquisite wines and entices visitors with its impressive castle complex. Your journey then takes you to Pulkau, romantically nestled in a valley amidst the countryside. Not far from its picturesque, historic town center, Pulkau boasts two magnificent churches—the Church of the Precious Blood and St. Michael’s Church. From there, you’ll cycle on to the border town of Hardegg. Austria’s smallest town lies in the deep, winding valley of the Thaya River. Amid vast forests, the mighty four-towered knight’s castle rises high above the town on a rocky ridge. The route then takes you across the border into the Znaim region, where you’ll reach Vranov (Frain), a town steeped in history. A tour of the castle here is highly recommended. You’ll continue cycling to Znojmo (Znaim). This old castle and trading town boasts a well-preserved medieval town center. The city’s landmark is the 80-meter-high town hall tower, which, together with the Gothic St. Nicholas Church, forms the city’s distinctive skyline. From Znojmo (Znaim), the tour takes you back to Retz.

There is a short-term parking zone right on the main square. It is therefore advisable to park elsewhere or at the nearby train station.
The wine town of Retz is very easy to reach by car. This is where Federal Highway B30—coming from Gerad and Hollabrunn—and Federal Highway B35—coming from the Czech Republic and Pulkau—intersect.
Trains run at regular intervals from Vienna via Hollabrunn. Even if you're traveling from Znaim, there is a train connection available.
