Trail markers: red - yellow - blue

Walking to the edge of town, a farm road across from the Millennium Column leads to Long-Distance Hiking Trail 06. The trail markers (red-white-red) guide us past the Pülnhof, across a high moor, and on to the Ferdinandwarte. Shortly before the lookout tower, we turn left off Trail 06 and, following the white-blue-white-marked trail, reach this viewpoint after 5 minutes (view of the historic towns of Dürnstein, Mautern, Stein, and Krems). Following the white-blue-white trail, the steep descent leads to the Donauleiten and, via the village road through Hundsheim, to Mauternbach. At the edge of Mauternbach, near the small wayside chapel, turn right and hike uphill along the former Roman road—with its still-visible wheel ruts (stone slabs)—back to Unterbergern.

In Unterbergern, there are parking areas in the village that serve as good starting points for hikes.

Unterbergern is easily accessible by car: Coming from Krems or Mautern, take the B33 (Aggsteiner Straße) to Mautern, and from there, follow the signs on the state highway toward Bergern im Dunkelsteinerwald.

The church in Unterbergern is not accessible by public transportation, or at least it is very difficult to reach by public transportation. From Krems, you can take bus 720 to Mauternbach Mitte and then walk there for 30 minutes.
