Hiking tour Starting from Berndorf Train Station
The main town in the Triestingtal, the municipality of Berndorf, is nestled in the hills of the Triestingtal, surrounded by black pine forests. The town is known nationwide for its historical development, which is closely linked to the Krupp family. Traces of this period can be seen everywhere in the town. For example, the workers' housing estates, villas, schools and factory buildings bear witness to this period. A museum in Bahnstraße is therefore also dedicated to this era. The starting point for this leisurely hike is the train station in Berndorf. If you’re arriving by car, you can also start at Margarethenkirche or the water tower (accessible via Hernsteinerstraße and Kruppstraße).
At first, the hike leads uphill through the town and the Krupp housing developments toward Margarethenkirche and the historic school buildings, then continues through new residential areas to reach the water tower (you can also drive this far). Here, you leave the town limits and hike on mostly good trails—though some sections are rocky and root-strewn—through black pine forests to the trail junction in front of the Pöllinger Kreuz, where you’ll also reach the highest point of the hike (elevation approx. 470 m). Following the red trail markers, you’ll arrive at a leisurely pace in Pöllau, where you can stop for a break at the “Bockerl-Bar.” The return route takes you along the quiet Steinhofstraße to Steinhof and back to Berndorf via the Weinbergweg, which offers beautiful views of Grillenberg and the Mandling Mountains.
After returning to Berndorf, we recommend visiting the Margarethenkirche and the Stilklassen or the Krupp Museum, located right at the starting point (Bahnhofstraße).
Standard Hiking Gear
From the train station, turn onto Hernsteinerstraße, cross Neugasse, and, after passing Brunntalgasse, walk up the ramp-like Kruppstraße (blue and yellow markings, signposts) to Kruppplatz (monument). Cross the square straight ahead and continue along Kruppstraße to Margarethenkirche. Go around the church on the right (blue markings, signposts), past the historic schools, and turn right onto Schubertstraße, continuing until you reach Wasserturmweg. Follow this road (blue, yellow) steeply uphill to the water tower. Beautiful view of the town of Berndorf.
Immediately after the water tower, turn right onto a sandy road that leads into the forest along the water reservoir and dog training area (blue markings). Cross the parking lot of the dog training area and follow the blue markings onto a footpath (partly rocky and root-covered) through the forest, slightly uphill, through a sparse pine forest, and across a clearing beneath the high-voltage power line. Continuing on a wider path, you’ll reach a trail junction (rest area, memorial cross), where the red trail (Pöllau-Pottenstein) crosses. (A short detour to the Pöllingerkreuz, 30 m straight ahead, is possible.) At this trail junction, leave the blue trail and take the red-marked hiking trail, which leads left toward Pöllau. You’ll walk slightly downhill on a forest road through a black pine forest until a trail (marked red) branches off to the left of the forest road, which soon rejoins a forest road. Finally, walking downhill along a forest road, you leave the forest and cross the meadows with fruit trees on a dirt road above Pöllau. When you reach the first farmstead, the blue trail branches off to the right toward Waxeneck, but you should instead turn onto the paved road heading downhill and reach the “Jausenstation Bockerl-Bar” (Pöllau No. 2), which has a small terrace and a children’s playground.
Continue along the road out of the valley (red trail marker), past the quarry to Steinhof. At the junction with the Geyergraben, the red trail ends; now follow the yellow trail on Steinhofstraße until you reach Weinbergweg, which branches off to the left (yellow, MTB Alpentour route). Continue on the paved road to the end of the neighborhood and follow the dirt road—which offers beautiful views—on flat and slightly uphill terrain until you reach Wasserturmweg in Berndorf again at the war memorial. Head downhill on Wasserturmweg and through Schubertstraße back to Margarethenkirche and the train station.
