Description
The market town of Weitersfeld lies on Bohemian granite just above the Manhartsberg and forms the southernmost gateway from the Weinviertel to the Waldviertel. The flat expanses of the Weinviertel end at the ridge of the Manhartsberg and are replaced by an undulating, partly wooded plateau - a charming contrast that can be wonderfully observed on a train ride on the popular Reblaus-Express. Our landscape is characterized by grain crops and, more recently, by alternative agricultural crops such as poppy, rapeseed, caraway and milk thistle. Fronsburg Castle, once the residence of the Khevenhüller princes, bears witness to the historical importance of the region. Oberhöflein Castle is owned by the Suttner-Gatterburg family, relatives of Nobel Prize winner Bertha v. Suttner. The pilgrimage church Maria im Gebirge, once more important than Mariazell and Altötting, is experiencing a renaissance again. Our healthy, varied landscape is particularly popular with cyclists.
