Description

"High up on the Buchberg, the view is beautiful. All around you can see your beloved homeland. Mountain and valley far and wide, forests everywhere, and the beautiful Anzbach valley." This is how Maria Waldherr sings about the destination of this easy but very rewarding hiking tour. Sports enthusiasts can let off steam on the climbing wall near the train station right at the start. For everyone else, the route leads past the castle wall to Almersberg - where the last death sentence was carried out on the execution ground in 1822. The town's Jewish cemetery is also located here. Neulengbach has been home to a Jewish community since the 14th century. Then you come to the church of St. Laurenzi. In prehistoric times, there was a pagan place of worship here, which was later Christianized. The Romanesque rotunda is the oldest building in Neulengbach. A Gothic choir was added to the church in the late Middle Ages. The patron saint goes back to Emperor Otto I's victory against the Magyars in 955. You then climb further up the mountain through beech forests. The strategic importance of the elevation has always been clear from the moat systems on the summit plateau. There is evidence that it has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The 22.5-metre-high Buchbergwarte, which was built in 2004 using modern timber construction methods, and the new refuge, which opened in 2003, are located on the 496-metre-high summit. The lookout itself houses numerous photographs and old maps of the area, as well as interactive display boards and finds that illustrate life around the Buchberg then and now.
