Hainburg → Bad Deutsch-Altenburg → Engelhartstetten → Schloss Hof → Hainburg
(→ Wolfsthal → Bratislava → Devin)
The tour starts in the medieval town of Hainburg. From the Hainburg boat landing, you’ll cycle upstream along the Danube toward Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Crossing the imposing Danube Bridge—which offers a magnificent view of the Danube Floodplains National Park—you’ll reach the other bank of the Danube and head to Stopfenreuth. We recommend a detour to the Danube, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim on hot days.
From Stopfenreuth, the tour continues through the fields and meadows of the Marchfeld to Engelhartstetten and Schlosshof. Take the opportunity to visit Niederweiden Castle or Schloss Hof. Spanning more than 50 hectares, Schloss Hof is Austria’s second-largest palace complex after Schönbrunn. The magnificent palace, the Baroque gardens, and a tranquil estate combine to form a Baroque total work of art—a dreamlike backdrop for those traveling back in time.
The tour continues across the Freedom Bike Bridge near Schloss Hof into neighboring Slovakia to Devínská Nová Ves. You’ll then cycle along the March River to Devin, where Devin Castle, the ruins of an imposing fortress, towers atop a rocky outcrop at the confluence of the March and Danube rivers.
The tour continues along the Danube to Bratislava, where you cross to the other bank of the Danube via the Lanfranconi Bridge. Named after its Italian architect, the bridge is 764 meters long, making it the second-longest bridge in Bratislava.
From there, the route follows the Danube cycle path all the way back to Austria. In Wolfsthal, you can visit the pilgrimage church “Maria am Birnbaum.” Dedicated to St. James, it marks the starting point of the Way of St. James in Austria. Just a few kilometers past Wolfsthal, you’ll return to your starting point, Hainburg an der Donau.
