When choosing your route, make sure it’s appropriate for your fitness level. Check to see if the restaurants and cafes you plan to visit along the way are open. Pack your fully charged cell phone and maps in your backpack. For cross-border trips, please always carry a passport or ID card with you.
Sturdy shoes, functional clothing, sun and rain protection, maps, trekking poles if needed, first-aid kit (blister bandages), and plenty of food (snacks, granola bars, fruit, water).
From the market square, head over the Kirchenberg (carved statue of Jesus in the church garden) and walk along Leopolds to the Graphitwerk site (signpost). Continue on to Voitsau and, at the back of the village below the transmitter station, head toward Marbach/Kl. Krems (about 1 km of which is a dirt road). In Marbach, the trail branches off to the right toward Koppenhof, where you’ll pass the Wachauer Marmor quarry. Continue on to Kalkgrub, down the Hammerberg to Kleine Krems, past the old sawmill, and on to the state highway (about 1.5 km on a dirt road). Now turn left and follow the path toward Bernhards to Galgenberg; from there, head back toward Kleine Krems and return to the starting point via the footbridge with the weir.
There is plenty of parking available right on the market square.
Take the A1 to Melk, cross the Danube Bridge, and continue downstream to Spitz/Danube. At the roundabout at the entrance to Spitz/Danube, take the second exit; after about 15 km, cross the Spitzer Graben toward Mühldorf to reach Kottes.
Take the S5 via Krems/Danube to Weißenkirchen/Wachau. At the end of Weißenkirchen, turn right onto the Seiberer (mountain road); after about 15 km, you’ll reach Kottes.
Coming from Zwettl, take the B36 to Ottenschlag; turn left at Ottenschlag Castle, keep left again at the Jager company, and after about 7 km, you’ll reach Kottes.
ÖBB Postbus Routes 1422, 1424, 1440, 1442, 1444
Before you reach Kottes, on Galgenberg, you'll find a bench with a magnificent view of the foothills of the Alps and the town of Kottes.
