The “Discovery Tour – The Danube Meets Lake Neusiedl” is a joint project between Burgenland and Lower Austria. It connects the attractions in both states, offering cyclists a cultural experience in addition to the natural scenery. The route passes through the following towns: Loop, Neusiedl am See – Parndorf – Neudorf bei Parndorf – Gattendorf – Pama – Kittsee – Berg – Edelstal – Prellenkirchen – Petronell-Carnuntum – Rohrau – Gerhaus – Pachfurth – Bruck an der Leitha – Bruckneudorf – Parndorf – Neusiedl am See
Water is a constant companion on this discovery tour. It begins in Neusiedl am See. The Lake Neusiedl region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel National Park. After traversing the vast Parndorf Plateau, you’ll eventually reach the town of Edelstal via Kittsee and Berg. Here, natural mineral water bubbles up from the ground, known as the Römerquelle.
Wind—The way state-of-the-art technology shapes the flat landscape is already evident on the drive from Neusiedl toward Parndorf, where you’ll see the massive wind farm.
From Prellenkirchen, the route leads to Petronell and the impressive natural landscape of the Danube floodplains.
There is no shortage of historical discoveries either. In Petronell, Roman antiquity comes to life again in the Roman city of Carnuntum. Numerous historical gems line the rest of the bike tour—such as Rohrau Castle, the medieval center of Bruck/Leitha, or the Roman country villa near Bruckneudorf. From there, the loop leads via Parndorf back to Neusiedl.
Wine: It’s not far from the water to the wine. Along this leisurely route, wine shops, wine taverns, and wine cellars invite you to sample the famous wines from the Carnuntum and Neusiedlersee wine-growing regions. Numerous places to stop for refreshments await with culinary delights.
Since many bike paths are agricultural access roads, agricultural traffic should be expected. Mutual consideration ensures these paths remain pleasant for all users.
Austria: There is a bicycle helmet obligation for children up to 12 years. Reflective vests are not mandatory in dusk, darkness or poor visibility, but certainly advantageous. Here is the Austrian bicycle regulation.
Slovakia: Bicycle helmet obligation for all children under 15 years. For adults the helmet obligation applies only outside urban areas. It is strongly recommended that adults also always wear a bicycle helmet. Cyclists riding on the roadside under reduced visibility must wear visible signaling elements or a reflective vest.
Hungary: There is no helmet obligation for cyclists. The maximum speed for cyclists outside the built-up area is 40 km/h. A speed of 50 km/h is allowed if the cyclist wears a helmet. At night and poor visibility all cyclists must wear a reflective vest.
Travel documents: Valid identity card or passport is mandatory!
A pair of binoculars is highly recommended, as it allows you to explore the beauties of nature even better.
The route can also be ridden in partial sections:
Section A from Neusiedl am See to Bruck an der Leitha // Bruck an der Leitha to Petronell-Carnuntum length approx. 35 km
Section B: Petronell to Kittsee, length: approx. 24 km
Section C: Neusiedl to Kittsee, length: approx. 38 km
However, you can also start at any other place along the route, as it is a circular route! Be sure to pay attention to the wind conditions, because even cycling against a mild breeze can become tiring over time. So whether you cycle clockwise or counterclockwise, it is best to decide according to the current wind direction.
If you arrive by car and want to start in Neusiedl am See you can park there at the main station. Only a few 100 meters away is the entry to the explorer route. However, you can also start and park in any other place around – it is best in this case to contact the respective tourist office.
