The parish church dedicated to St. Pancratius originated from a castle chapel. The first documented mention of the village (1133/38) seems to have marked the beginning of more intensive settlement. As there was no space for further development on the church hill, the settlement began to develop along the Bachsenke. Prangerplatz emerged as a further focal point with the acquisition of the district court (around 1602). At that time, the old market fortifications probably already existed, the remains of which are still preserved today in the so-called Biritor. The town and the castle in particular are closely linked to the history of modern art in Austria. The Hauer-Fruhmann family of artists acquired Lengenfeld Castle in 1970 and turned it into a center of modern art.
The wine cellar lanes typical of the wine-growing regions should not be forgotten. The two largest are Dornergasse and Heiligengasse (actually Johannesgasse). Others include Annagasse, Kollerweg and Mühlfeldgasse.
The trail begins at the town hall and runs about 600 meters through the town center to the castle. Here, turn left onto Johannesgasse, Lengenfeld’s longest wine cellar lane, lined with romantic cellar buildings. At the end of the paved path, the hiking trail leads up a small incline to the right into the Spießberg vineyard. You’ll cross the L 55 and see a large vineyard. Hike steeply uphill for about 800 m until you reach the coniferous forest. The view from here is wonderful. The trail continues to the right through a wooded area. After about 1 km, turn left onto a farm road. From here, you’ll have a great view of the Lengenfeld golf course.
The trail now leads through a romantic sunken path. After about 800 m, take a sharp right. You’ll now hike for about 2 km along a stream surrounded by mystical flora. You might even spot a few fire salamanders. Before you cross the L 55, you’ll see the drinking water treatment plant for the market town of Lengenfeld and a wayside shrine. The trail continues along a farm path, passing the Lengenfeld wastewater treatment plant on your left. You are now in the floodplain area. The trail continues through meadows until you reach the first houses east of Lengenfeld. Now you’ll cross the Sirnitzbach. Keep to the right and then continue straight ahead. You’ll pass the adventure playground, the sports field, and the Lengenfeld fire station. On your left, you’ll see a fallow deer enclosure. The trail now leads back to the town center, your starting point.
