Hiking tour Starting from Kaumberg, Main Square
Kaumberg is the westernmost municipality in Triestingtal, just before Gerichtsberg, the watershed between Triestingtal and Gölsental. The difference between the rolling hills of the Vienna Woods and the foothills of the Alps is clearly evident here. To the north and east of the village of Kaumberg, shorter hikes through hilly cultural landscapes are possible, which are also described in the hiking map of the municipality of Kaumberg as Froschweg, Hahnweg, Burgweg, Hirschweg and Fuchsweg. The ascent to the Hocheck (1,037 m) from Kaumberg, the easternmost 1000 m peak in the Lower Austrian Pre-Alps, and the subsequent long ridge hike are a challenge in terms of fitness. The village of Kaumberg itself has plenty to see with the barrel fountain on the main square, the Gothic parish church of St. Michael and the local history museum. A particular highlight of the municipality and a very popular excursion destination is the ruins of Araburg Castle, which can be seen from afar. The Fuchsweg trail leads mainly across meadows and pastures through the hilly Wienerwald landscape to the north of Kaumberg.

The Fuchsweg offers a short hike directly from the market square. It climbs comfortably across meadows and on asphalt roads to the Halbwaxgruber farm, where you turn east and walk almost flat across meadows and along forests to the start of the way back. Here you have beautiful views of the Schöpfl to the north and the Hocheck to the southeast. Descending across meadows and on goods roads, you soon reach the B 18 again, which takes you back to the village.
Watch out for grazing livestock when crossing pastures!
Standard Hiking Gear
From the main square, head west, past Café Maria Theresia onto Mariazeller Straße; after 100 meters, turn right onto the blue-marked trail (sign for Fuchsweg, Via Sacra circular hiking trail) and pass under the B 18. After crossing the railroad tracks, the trail ascends to the left on a gravel path up to the meadows. Now follow a meadow path straight uphill to a massive oak tree with a wayside shrine and continue to a prominent row of trees, along which you’ll reach an asphalt road. Follow this road to the right uphill to the fork in the road below Stadlmann (or Weißmann). Follow the asphalt road to the right (blue trail markers), past the Jura farm and slightly uphill to the Halbwaxgruber farm. 30 meters past the farm, do not follow the blue trail marker anymore (it leads to St. Corona); instead, take the path on the right heading east toward a small forest. The path now runs along the northern edge of the forest and then crosses a large meadow. As soon as the forest begins again after the meadow, follow the signposts (Kaumberg Markt, Fuchsweg) to the right and downhill. Crossing meadows and pastures, you’ll soon reach the farm at an elevation of 573, past which you continue downhill into a ditch with a stream. Follow the road down the valley until you reach the railroad tracks. 100 meters further on, to the left, is the railroad crossing, and immediately after that, you’ll reach Federal Highway 18. Follow this road to the right back into the town of Kaumberg.
