Uphill route:
You start from the Trail Center via the Uphill Flowtrail (uphill single trail, narrow mountain bike uphill route with roots and stones in places) and then from the reservoir on forest roads (path with loose ground) up to the Hochwechsel.
Take a breather at the reservoir (at approx. 1158 m), at the Kampsteiner Schwaig (at approx. 1400 m) and in between as required.
Downhill trails:
After the long uphill section, it's time for the first downhill trail. "The WU", a single trail (blue/easy, approx. 2.7 km long and 265 m downhill), which starts from the highest point of the Wechsel, leads past blueberries and cows over roots and stone slabs with a constant view as far as Vienna and Lake Neusiedl.
Afterwards, it's time for a well-deserved lunch break with a hearty hut snack at the Marienseer Schwaig Hut. Tip: the fresh buttermilk is a dream!
After lunch, it's a leisurely ride on forest paths back towards the trail center. On the way back, however, there are still a few particularly easy trails waiting.
Shortly after the Kampsteiner Schwaig, turn off onto the Almrauschtrail (blue/easy) and let your tires shred over roots, stones and the soft forest floor to the Almrauschhütte.
There you can fill up your water bottles and take a short break before returning to the trail center and the starting point. You can either return via the forest road (easy) or, if you still have enough energy left, via the single trail (medium difficulty/red).
The single trail winds its way through bends and small compressions over roots, stones, steep sections and natural forest floor in places, providing the ingredients for a perfect enduro ride on the last trail.
From the reservoir, the flow trail takes you back to the starting point
Once you reach the bottom, you can enjoy a cool beer or Kracherl in the Wexl Lounge.
It’s important to note the name of this peripheral mountain range: “Wechsel” (Change) truly lives up to its name when it comes to sudden shifts in weather conditions. Even if you set out in sunshine and above-freezing temperatures, you’ll often find an icy, cold wind blowing in your face at the summit. But the opposite can also happen—you might be greeted by sunshine at the summit even though you set out in fog. Therefore, be sure to factor in the weather conditions when planning your hike and pack an extra layer of clothing in your backpack.
