Hiking tour Starting from Gars Information Center
From the Gars Information Center, head to the Thunau district and walk along Gföhler Straße, continuing on through Goldberggasse until you reach its highest point. From there, a narrow trail (unmarked) leads up to the Goldberg (390 m). Continue along a beautiful forest trail to the road toward Tautendorf, where you immediately turn sharply left. You’ll arrive at the Schanze and Holzwiese excavation site. The ridge of the Schanzberg, which rises more than 400 m, was continuously inhabited from the late Neolithic period through the end of the Early Middle Ages due to its strategic location on an important north-south route through the Kamp Valley. A fortified hilltop settlement on the so-called “Holzwiese” was discovered as early as the 19th century. Systematic investigations of the site began in 1965 and continue to this day. The trail then continues to the lookout point at Schimmelsprung, where you’ll enjoy a magnificent view of the beautiful Kamp Valley. From there, you’ll walk downhill to Hallmarterl and continue through Schimmelsprunggasse back to Thunau. From there, you’ll cross the Kamp Bridge again to return to Gars.
