Weissenbach is located in the Triestingtal valley exactly where the Furtherbach stream flows into the valley from the southwest and the Neuhauserbach stream from the north. The former summer resort, which can still be reached by train, is an ideal starting point for several beautiful hikes. To the west of Weissenbach rises the Hocheck, which at an altitude of 1,037 m already offers an extended hike. The fact that there is also a viewing tower at the summit with a fantastic 360° panorama rounds off the hiking experience. North of the Triesting, more leisurely hikes through the typical Vienna Woods landscape predominate, with gentler mountains and forest areas interspersed with many meadows and pastures. Here you will find both the typical pine forests of the region as well as magnificent high beech forests. An exception in these gentle landscapes is the Peilstein, whose limestone walls protrude from the forest and which is the traditional climbing area of the Viennese. In Weissenbach itself, the Triestingtal Museum is well worth a visit, with its extensive collection of around 10,000 exhibits from the valley, as well as the church and cemetery. In the district of Neuhaus, the renovated Neuhaus Castle with the parish and the forest class are well worth a visit.

Description

You can also travel to this hike by public transport (Triestingtalbahn, Weissenbach station).

From the station, you first cross the village of Weissenbach and walk a short distance along the B 18 before turning off into the Raintal valley and into the countryside. You walk northwest along a wooded ridge between Nöstachbach and Triesting. The forest is then replaced by meadows and soon the Hafnerberg pilgrimage church, the destination of the first section, comes into view. After visiting this baroque church, you have to walk along the road towards Nöstach for a while, but soon you branch off onto a side road. The Nöstachbach stream is crossed and shortly afterwards the Tavern Karner is reached. This is where the ascent to the Peilstein (716 m) begins, initially through meadows, then through beech forest. The descent to Neuhaus alternates between several meadows and wooded areas, and finally you have a wonderful view over to Neuhaus Castle. Once you reach the road, you walk through Neuhaus (or make a detour to the castle and the forest class) and finally back through the forest to Weissenbach.

All in all, this is an extensive circular hike through typical Vienna Woods landscapes, linking the highlights of Hafnerberg, Peilstein and Neuhaus Castle. There are several places to stop for refreshments along the way.

Route description You start at the station and pass through Weissenbach along the main street (= Triesting Valley bike path No. 42), past the municipal office, leaving the church square to the left. After 800 m, you cross the tracks and turn left into Badgasse (= Triesting Valley bike path No. 42), which you follow for another 400 m. Over a wooden bridge you reach the B 18, Hainfelder federal road, which you follow for 200 m until the blue mark leads right towards Hafnerberg into the Raintal. At the last farm, the paved road ends and a field path continues for 300 m through meadows. Watch for the junction, do not go straight on, but follow the blue mark uphill to the right into the forest. Now a narrow path leads to the left, which soon broadens ascending within the forest to the rest area 'Eichenruhe' (wayside shrine, benches). Ascending a bit steeper, you reach a junction (right to Peilstein, Neuhaus) where you take the left path (blue mark) towards Hafnerberg. Over a flat ridge on a wider gravel road, you come to a forest road where the green mark joins from the right. Follow this forest road left (green and blue) along the slope to a crossroads where the green mark leads down left to Tasshof. The blue mark leads on a wide hiking path half-right uphill through beech forest, circumnavigating an elevation to the right. Following the path, it goes now somewhat steeper downhill and soon the forest edge is reached. Varied, flat over meadows and through small forest sections, you reach Rotte Eckenbauer, where an asphalt road begins. Staying on the road and following the marks (Hafnerberg, blue), the first destination of the hike, the Hafnerberg pilgrimage church, comes into view and is reached while staying on the road.After visiting the church, turn north on the road towards Nöstach, first on the sidewalk, then on the roadside until after 500 m (after the Nöstach place sign) a narrower road (Alte Straße, sign: Peilstein, MTB Hafnerberg, or in the opposite direction: Via Sacra, Viennese Pilgrim Route) branches off to the right (marking 404). Going downhill on this, you reach the valley floor of the Nöstach valley and cross the Nöstachbach on a bridge and 100 m further the state road. Follow this to the right (Holzschlag, Peilstein house) and after 200 m turn left onto a narrow paved road (Mostheurige Karner, MTB Hafnerberg, marking red-white-red). Passing a chapel, after 500 m you reach the Mostheurige Karner. Between the house and barn, you climb straight along a row of trees uphill and cross a forest road. The last section of the path is now a steeper and rocky path (under the power line) that leads to Holzschlag. Before the wayside shrine, turn right onto a forest path (sign: Peilstein house, WWW 404) leading into the closed forest area on the northwest slope of the Peilstein. Follow the wide, partly steep and rocky hiking path (red-white-red) uphill in 2 bends until the northeast ridge of Peilstein is reached. Here the path from Raisenmarkt (01) joins from the left; you follow path 404 right to the Peilstein house, which is reached in a few minutes (3 hours from Weissenbach).After the refreshment break, walk 200 m downhill on the gravel road and then right onto a hiking path into the forest (Viennese Pilgrim Path, 04, 01, 448, marking red-white-red). However, after 80 m, do not descend left (Kremer climb to Schwarzensee) but continue straight to a meadow (Viennese Pilgrim Path, 448). Now follow the path downhill, over scenic meadows and through forest sections until a large meadow is entered above Neuhaus. Great view over Neuhaus Castle. Following the power line, the road is reached. To ascend to the castle, choose the church path (= road to the castle) right opposite and the castle is reached in 5 minutes. After visiting the forest classroom and the castle complex, exit through the north gate and descend the castle path in switchbacks down into Neuhaus. Here you cross the Weissenbach street, turn west, cross the Neuhauserbach into a villa settlement, which you cross on Wolzogen street. Where this street makes a right-hand turn, a narrow path branches off left that leads shortly uphill to a forest road (448). Following this now downhill, you soon reach the B18, Hainfelder federal road. Cross this, choose a narrow passage path opposite, and after crossing to the right over the tracks, the starting point, the train station, is reached again.
