Hiking tour Starting from Laaben, Gasthof zur Glashütte Klamm 6 3053 Laaben
In 1683, several hundred Laabentaler entrenched themselves in a Schöpflgraben ditch from the attacking Turks - through cunning and courage, the population successfully defended themselves. We make our way through alder, oak, maple, spruce, beech and mixed woodland of all kinds, lovely high meadows spoil us with enchanting views in all directions, before finally stopping for a moment of prayer in the dark gorge at the Türkenstein, which commemorates the events of 1683.
The Türkenstein is the most important historical monument in the Laabental valley and the one that is most strongly remembered by the local population - interviews with locals about the events of that time should be part of the tour - the books by Maria Stadlmann and Ingeborg Rinner from Brand also give a vivid account of that time (see literature). Only towards the end of the hike will we pause next to the rock memorial on this heavy ground, before that we will gain impressions of the typical geology of the Vienna Woods, as well as the charming cultural landscape characterized by forest farmers.
In addition to the historical highlight, there are many natural beauties and interesting things to discover. For example, just before the 'black cross' in the stately spruce culture, we can see old pear trees, a mighty sweet chestnut and a stone fountain as witnesses to the Hirschbach farm that once stood here. The authentic inns with their excellent home cooking (the Glashütte inn currently has no kitchen) and the exemplary ÖKO refuge on the Gföhlberg are further attractions.
Route description:
Stock up on provisions from Susi's store, the small grocery store, and head up the asphalt road between the Gasthof zur Glashütte and the guest garden. After 150 m, we turn left onto an unmarked path and walk uphill along a typical Wienerwald ditch. The path turns slightly to the left in front of a spruce grove and soon the picturesque Klein- and Großleiten estates come into view. We pass these, keeping to the cart track, past a reservoir and up to the "Red Cross". Following the white/green/white markings to the west, the trail leads towards Stollberg (signpost), we cross a forest path and emerge through a dark spruce forest to the Hirschbach meadow, where the "Black Cross" awaits us between two larch trees. Continue along the panoramic ridge, past a beautiful solitary oak, until the field path turns left just before the Stollberger-Anhöhe, where we turn right down to Gasthof Kreuzwirt.
From there, take the road towards Laaben, after Stollberg Castle turn right onto Gföhlbergweg. Immediately at the large lime tree pointing the way, turn right again towards Hainfeld/Bernau. The markings of the 404 trail lead us up to the ridge - magnificent views from the high meadow at the Sonnleiten estate (with chapel). To the east, following the white/blue/white markings, we continue to the Gföhlbergsattel - a special section! Ascent to the Gföhlberghütte via a well-marked path. Again well marked, we descend to the Klammhöhe - from here we have to follow the road towards Kaumberg for approx. 2 km before turning left onto the plateau towards Schöpfl. Past the imposing cross: "Trigon der Fruchtbarkeit" (Trigon of Fertility), later passing the HellsKlamm event area straight ahead, we hike along a well-maintained forest path until the Stützenreit alpine pasture appears on the right. Before we descend left into the dark gorge at this point, following the signpost: "Glashütte über Türkenstein", we enjoy the light and height once again. Through dark fir trees, we soon come to a hut reminiscent of a fairy tale, the high and lonely Klamm 24. The forest quickly turns into a picture-book beech forest. At the junction with a well-maintained forest path, a steep, stony footpath winds its way down to the Türkenstein. From here, the trail continues downhill to the nearby forest path and now leads us along the Klammbach stream to the main road. The last 400 m on this road back to the starting point at Glashütte.
