High above Hardegg, on the Czech side, lies the so-called Hardegger Warte. About 25 meters past the border building, a marked trail branches off to the left, leading through the forest to the Thaya River. From here, you have a view across the river weir toward Hardegg. The natural vegetation in this section remained virtually untouched during the era of the “Iron Curtain.” A few concrete bunkers still bear witness to the former fortifications. At a ditch, the trail turns right and leads through the forest onto the plateau until it reaches a paved road.
To the left, the path leads to Čížov (1 km), where the information center for the Czech Podyjí National Park is located and a relic of the “Iron Curtain” has been preserved. To the right, the path leads back to Hardegg. After 1 km, a side trail branches off to the Hardegg Lookout. Don’t miss this view of the Thaya Valley and Hardegg. Back on the road, the path descends steeply to the national border.
