Hiking tour Starting from Kaumberg, Main Square
Kaumberg is the westernmost municipality in the Triestingtal valley. The difference between the rolling hills of the Vienna Woods and the foothills of the Alps is already clearly evident here. The village of Kaumberg itself has plenty to see with the barrel fountain on the main square, the Gothic parish church of St. Michael and the local history museum . A particular highlight of the municipality and a very popular excursion destination is the ruins of Araburg Castle, which can be seen from afar.
The Hirschweg trail leads across meadows and sometimes through woodland, offering great views. During the hike, mountains such as Eisernen Tor, Schneeberg and Ötscher come into view. From Kaumberg, the Hirschweg trail first leads uphill via Sonnenhang to Brennhof. You can already enjoy beautiful views of the Araburg during the ascent. From here, it crosses an almost flat asphalt road to Gerichtsberg, the watershed between Triestingtal in the east and Gölsental in the west. Here you can stop off at the "Gasthaus am Gerichtsberg" (fresh sheep's cheese). After crossing the B18 main road, the trail follows the farm access road (asphalt road) to the Herbst farm, which you do not reach, however, as the trail turns east into the forest at the Bramerkapelle chapel. Through the forest, the trail leads north past the Bramerhöhe (740 m) and the Bramerkreuz until it crosses meadows again before the Großreith farm (Berg-Heuriger Großreith). After a stretch of asphalt road past the Stadlmann, the trail leads straight downhill to the starting point with beautiful views of Kaumberg.
Standard Hiking Gear
From the main square, turn west, pass Café Maria Theresia, and follow Mariazeller Straße (Triestingtal Bike Trail No. 42) until, after 150 m, the Sonnenhang trail branches off to the left (yellow markings, “Hirschweg” sign). The road climbs steeply until it levels off after the last houses. Staying straight on the road—which winds gently uphill and downhill through small woods and across meadows—the route leads to a rest area with an information sign below the Brennhof. Here, follow the bike path signs to the right until you reach a signpost for “B 18, Gerichtsberg, Gsth. Petzl, 800 m.” The road starts out flat and then descends toward Gerichtsberg, where you cross the B 18. Across the road, follow the “Güterweg Herbsthof” uphill through the forest and across meadows in four switchbacks until the incline levels off. Once you reach the saddle, turn right toward the Bramer Chapel. From here, you’ll enjoy a panoramic view across the Mostviertel region all the way to the Ötscher. Follow the “Hirschweg” signs along the “Forstweg Bramer” for 100 m into the forest, then take the forest road branching off to the right and leading uphill (approx. 20 hm) forest road branching off to the right (sign: Hirschweg) and continue partly on a damp forest path to a small clearing. Here, leave the forest path and turn right toward the cross. Passing the cross, turn east onto a forest path that now descends along the northern flank of the Kleinreitherhöhe, crossing over to the meadows near the Großreith farm (Cider, fruit juices, fine brandies). Pass the farm on the left to reach the paved road, then follow it downhill to the intersection near the Stadlmann farm.
From here, follow the blue trail markers downhill until, after 250 m, the signpost “Kaumberg Ort” and the blue trail markers direct you to the left onto a meadow path. The trail first leads through a row of trees, then across open meadows to a mighty oak tree with a wayside shrine. Continuing across the meadows—heading toward the church—you’ll soon reach the path that leads to the B 18 and, passing under it, back onto Mariazeller Straße.

There is a bus stop right on the market square (Kaumber/Triesting Marktplatz); the starting point is a 2-minute walk from there.
