A water-rich interplay between forests, fields, meadows, hilly plateaus and valleys: the tour through the Kampseen region is a varied cycling experience.
The Kampseen-Volt bike loop begins in Rastenfeld and, as the word “loop” suggests, also ends in the same town. Forests, fields, and meadows alternate with rolling high plateaus and valleys. The route first passes the Ottenstein, Dobra, and Thurnberg reservoirs and continues on to Krumau am Kamp. Through somewhat hillier terrain, the bike tour proceeds to Pölla, St. Leonhard am Hornerwald, Jaidhof, Gföhl, and Lichtenau. From here, the final kilometers bring you back toward the starting point of the loop, Rastenfeld. It’s well worth taking breaks along the way to visit Ottenstein Castle, the Dobra ruins, or the many artists’ gardens, castles, and churches. There’s plenty to satisfy your appetite, too: local restaurants invite you to stop for a bite of traditional Waldviertel cuisine. The tour is especially popular in the summer thanks to the numerous opportunities for swimming. Stops at the reservoirs provide a welcome chance to cool off.

When choosing a route, make sure it’s appropriate for your fitness level. Check to see if the restaurants you plan to visit along the way are open. Pack your cell phone and maps in your backpack.
We recommend: a helmet, appropriate clothing and footwear, rain and sun protection, a first-aid kit (blister bandages), and plenty of food and drink (snacks, granola bars, fruit, water).
The tour is ideal for e-bikes. Please do not leave any trash behind on the trail!
The starting point and also the endpoint of the bike loop is Rastenfeld. The town is known for its wild and romantic castle perched on the cliff above the village, as well as its immediate proximity to the Ottenstein Reservoir. This varied route covers a total of 128 kilometers by bike and involves climbing 1,738 meters in elevation. There’s no shortage of water either: the Ottenstein, Dobra, and Thurnberg reservoirs, as well as the Kamp and Krems rivers, offer truly special swimming experiences. The numerous inns in the towns along the Kamp Lakes Loop welcome visitors with typical down-to-earth warmth and traditional Waldviertel cuisine. And in addition to culinary delights, your hunger for culture will also be satisfied: In Krumau am Kamp, a wildly romantic castle perched on a cliff above the village awaits your visit. The Baroque-style Jaidhof Castle in the village is also worth a visit. In Wietzen near Lichtenau, you simply can’t miss the Artists’ Garden, featuring about 50 expressive stone sculptures.
Additional loops and connecting routes offer the perfect opportunity to plan the tour based on your stamina
