Mariazell Railway - The most beautiful combination of technology and nature.
Mariazell Railway - The most beautiful combination of technology and nature.
In 2013, 102 years after the Mariazellerbahn was electrified, the future of this historic narrow-gauge railway began with the introduction of new rolling stock—the “Himmelstreppe.”
The new vehicles have been in service on the Mariazellerbahn line since September 2013. The fleet consists of nine low-floor railcars and four panoramic cars. The modern interior, full air conditioning, and passenger information system make the journey a pleasure. The spacious compartments offer plenty of room for bicycles, strollers, and passengers with limited mobility.
The Mariazell railway runs for a length of 85 kilometers from the Lower Austrian state capital St. Pölten to the famous Styrian pilgrimage destination Mariazell, overcoming 619 meters in altitude. The highest point of the route is at 892 meters above sea level in the Gösing tunnel, the longest tunnel at 2,369 meters. The largest viaduct spans 113 meters in length and 37 meters in height over the Saugraben.
It is best to use the ÖBB park-and-ride facilities, which are free of charge for passengers.
From the West Autobahn A1, take the exit St. Pölten East or South towards the center or station.
Travel by train to St. Pölten main station and change there to the Mariazell railway (platform 13).
The Himmelstreppe offers a very special railway experience with four panoramic carriages.
