Hiking tour Starting from Mohnwirt Neuwiesinger, Armschlag
Hiking trails around the poppy village of Armschlag.
Hiking trails around the poppy village of Armschlag.
You’ll walk through the village heading west along the display cases of the Poppy Nature Trail. At the edge of the village, at the last display case, turn right and follow the marked trail (No. 12 and, according to the old markings, red-green-M) along the edge of the forest, past a small, abandoned sawmill. After a short uphill stretch, you’ll reach the Kohlstatt, a former charcoal kiln. After passing two small fish ponds, follow the marked farm road to the left until you reach the state highway to Bernreith, then walk through the town. At the edge of the village, continue straight ahead onto another farm road that leads you across fields and then a short distance through the forest to the state road to Bad Traunstein. Here, cross both the road and the railroad crossing, then turn left, following the path above the railroad tracks until, after a few hundred meters, you come to the Long-Distance Hiking Trail 605 (red-white-red) on a slight downhill slope.
Here you’ll see three trail markers (red-green – 12, red-white-red – 605, and No. 31), all of which lead to Ottenschlag. You’ll walk through the railroad viaduct and, immediately afterward, cross the Große Krems. From here, you can take a short detour to the romantic Weyrerteich (about 250 m along the forest road to the right, passing under the viaduct again). Back at the trail marker, the path now leads you through a stately high forest back to the state highway toward Bad Traunstein. Follow this briefly to the right and turn left onto a dirt road at the house. From a slight hill, you’ll have a beautiful view of Ottenschlag (about 2.5 km away). You’ll cross a state road again and follow the trail marker slightly downhill through a small forest, across the Raxenbach, and after a short stretch through the woods, you’ll finally reach the lower village pond in Ottenschlag. From here, Trail No. 12 leads into town, past the gas station, the Renner Inn, the pharmacy, and behind the parish church, continuing past the municipal office to the Jager Paint Store. From there, walk a short distance along Wachaustraße to the upper village pond, follow the dam, then turn onto Hubertusgasse. Shortly afterward, you’ll reach the Adenholzweg junction. Follow this path, past the Hubertus Stadium (sports field), and stay along the edge of the forest until you reach the entrance to a large forested area. On a nearby forest road, you’ll once again come across a red-white-red marker (WWW 606).
Continuing to follow both trail markers—No. 12 and the red-green-white-red one—you’ll reach the village of Rabenhof after about 4 kilometers and come to a state highway again. Here you’ll come to Trail No. 10 (Augenbründlweg), which leads you to Grainbrunn. Now follow the road to the left for a short distance, slightly downhill, until you reach a stone bridge. From there, continue straight ahead on a forest path into a high forest, which you’ll follow all the way to the Prihoda estate, where there’s an interesting river crossing and plenty to see. You’re now back on the state road (Kremstalstraße Sallingberg) and follow it for about 1.5 kilometers. Then turn left onto the main road. Shortly afterward, turn left again onto Sportplatzstraße toward the recreation center (Teichstüberl, a restaurant with a pond). From here, a dirt road leads you toward the Krems River. After about one kilometer, you’ll cross the river and, after passing through a wooded area on the left bank of the Krems, you’ll finally return to the poppy-seed village of Armschlag, where you can treat yourself to a well-deserved slice of poppy-seed strudel.
