Please note that hiking in the Meloner Moor is only permitted from June 20 through November 30!

When choosing your route, make sure it’s appropriate for your fitness level. Check to see if the restaurants and cafes you plan to visit along the way are open. Pack your fully charged cell phone and maps in your backpack. For cross-border hikes, please always carry a passport or ID card with you.

Sturdy footwear, functional clothing, sun and rain protection, maps, trekking poles if needed, first-aid kit (blister bandages), and plenty of food (snacks, granola bars, fruit, water).

From the information platform in the town center, walk about 400 meters toward Purrath on Trail No. 77, then turn left and follow the trail markers to the Dietrichsbach farm road, where you’ll turn right and hike to the Halterberg parking lot. This is where the actual loop trail through the Meloner Au begins. The Meloner Au is a nature reserve that is only open to hikers from June 20 through November 30. It serves as a habitat for the capercaillie, a wide variety of small animals, and plants that have become rare. The rest of your hike takes you past the Altmeloner Heilmoor and through the Fichtenbacher Au back to the Halterberg parking lot. Along the way, you can take a detour (about 1.5 km) to the Wagner family’s fascinating farm museum if you’d like. From the Halterberg parking lot, follow the trail signs for about 1 kilometer to return to your starting point in Altmelon.

Coming from St. Pölten or Vienna via Krems to Zwettl, take the B 38 to Groß Gerungs and from there to Altmelon, or take the B 124 to Altmelon at the Merzenstein junction.

Coming from the west, take the A1 to Linz, then the A7 and B 124 to Altmelon.
