When choosing your route, make sure it’s appropriate for your fitness level. Check to see if the restaurants and cafes you plan to visit along the way are open. Pack your fully charged cell phone and maps in your backpack. For cross-border trips, please always carry a passport or ID card with you.
Sturdy shoes, functional clothing, sun and rain protection, maps, trekking poles if needed, first-aid kit (blister bandages), and plenty of food (snacks, granola bars, fruit, water).
From Lichtenau’s main square, follow the trail markers and, after passing through the underpass on the main street, turn right past the sports complex. After a short stretch on the road, turn left and you’ll reach the Auteich. After another short stretch of paved road, turn left into a large wooded area, the riparian forest. Follow the marked trail until you reach a junction with a rest area in the woods, where you’ll turn left. You’ll then cross a paved road near a solitary house (a large clearing with meadows and fields after crossing the road).
At a trail junction in the forest ahead, you can take a short detour to the left back to Lichtenau or (which we recommend) continue straight ahead toward Wietzen, where you’ll reach the main attraction, the Artists’ Garden. Shortly before reaching the village of Wietzen, you’ll come to a wayside shrine where you’ll turn right onto a paved road leading to Wietzen. After taking your time to view the artwork, walk back along the side road to the aforementioned trail junction, where the sign points toward Lichtenau. Following this path, you’ll reach the main road, where, after about 700 meters on your right at the edge of Lichtenau, you’ll find a children’s playground. After another short stretch, turn right into the village just before the fire station, which will bring you back to the starting point.
From Vienna, take the A 22 and S 5 or the A 1 and S 33 to Gföhl (B 37). After Gföhl, turn left toward Lichtenau.
