Description

The path to the castle once led, as it still does today, from the Rotte Schrattenbach up into the forest, through a narrow gorge to the former castle meadow, which has now unfortunately been afforested with spruce trees. From here you can already see the mighty castle walls. Many parts of the former castle, such as gates with wooden bridges, walls, moat, bear or wolf kennels, castle courtyards, stables, storerooms, tower room and castle chapel can still be seen today. On the mountain side of the courtyard, opposite the gate, there is a small cave. This was obviously extended by human hands a long time ago.

Curious hikers can explore the old buildings and enjoy the beauty of the landscape. The castle is surrounded by woods and a steep slope with a via ferrata. You can enjoy a wonderful view of the tranquil valley where Schrattenbach lies and the mountain panorama of Gelände and the Hohe Wand. Numerous hikes are also possible from the ruins in the direction of Grünbach or Würflach. After the castle experience, it's time to head back down to the Gasthaus zum alten Schlossteich for refreshments.
