Description

This almost three-hour hike takes you from the Shipping and World Heritage Center via the two traffic circles to the Kunstmeile Krems and then left via the Kremser Tor gate into the old town of Stein. Shortly before the parish church, the Frauenbergstiege branches off to the right and takes you up to the Frauenberg. Walk through the church and then turn left. Via Hintere Fahrstraße you reach Reisperbachtalstraße, which you follow uphill. Shortly after the last houses, the Reisperbachtal nature trail begins, which is best followed on the "Bachweg". Numerous lovingly and detailed hand-painted panels by Eduard Cahak along the path show the local fauna and flora. At the end of the nature trail, turn right, cross the Reisperbach stream and reach the "Red Cross". There, turn right again and continue along Sentalstraße following the white-yellow-white markings. Shortly before a left-hand bend, steps branch off to the left, which take you to a narrow path that you follow uphill. Eventually you reach Dr.-Max-Thorwesten-Straße in the Krems district of Egelsee and turn right into it. This then joins Sentalstraße a little later, which takes you to Braunsdorferstraße, which you turn right into. Shortly after the highest point of this road, the signposted path branches off to the right to the Donauwarte, from where you have a beautiful view of almost the entire Krems city area. Then walk behind the observatory, following the red-white-red markings through the pedestrian passage in the fence. At the fork in the path, take the left-hand path and shortly afterwards cross a forest road. The narrow path then takes you to the asphalted Braunsdorferstraße. Before a bend to the right, you can take a shortcut through the forest, then continue downhill along Braunsdorferstraße. You will then come to a crossroads with green-painted railings to the left and right of the road. Turn left here and then right a few meters further on. With the cross in sight, you come to a road crossing and turn left into it. The road then bends to the right, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view over the Krems campus to the old town of Krems and the eastern districts on the left. On the right you will see the cross, because of which this hill is also called "Steiner Kreuzberg" by many. A narrow path takes you to this cross. Then continue downhill towards Stein. At the next crossroads, take the road that branches off to the left at a right angle, walk along the railings and then turn left again. This road takes you into the Steiner wine cellar lane, which you follow eastwards. You pass the Rebentor and shortly afterwards come to Neutorgasse, through which you walk to Steiner Landstraße and then turn left into it. Before house no. 27, turn right into Salzamtgasse. This takes you to Steiner Donaulände, into which you turn left. You will now see numerous historic buildings on your left, for example medieval salt warehouses such as the one that now houses the "Salzstadl" restaurant. Finally, you come back to the traffic circle at the Landsgalerie and turn right here to return to the starting point of the hike.
