Description
Canadian conditions at the start along the Ybbstal cycle path to St. Georgen am Reith. A 3km, up to 12% steep ascent to the large Kripp follows, before it goes downhill - only interrupted by a few short counter waves - through the high valley Prolling to Ybbsitz. From one of the main towns on the Iron Road - also known as the pearl of the small Ybbs Valley - the route follows the small Ybbs Valley cycle path downstream towards Waidhofen, before turning left in Gstadt towards Opponitz.
After 2km, do not continue along the Ybbstal cycle path, but turn left up a narrow, easy road towards Pechtholzkapelle. Maximum 9%, at the end a short ramp of over 15% and you reach the Pechtholzkapelle chapel on gravel - including a very beautiful view of the Ybbstal valley.
The descent to Opponitz is steep and starts on gravel, with a short countersurface and the last few kilometers are flat again on the Ybbstal cycle path back to Hollenstein.
- safety instructions Attention on some steep descents: - just before entering Ybbsitz (max. 14% over 600m)- after the Pechtholz chapel on gravel and later asphalt max. 16%
- Equipment Serviced (touring) bike, helmet, provisions, small change.
- Route description From Hollenstein follow the Ybbstal bike route to St. Georgen am Reith. There turn left and go 3 km uphill on asphalt with a maximum gradient of 12% and good road conditions to the large Kripp. A steep (16%) descent with a hairpin bend at the end as well as a second bend and a 500 m long counter climb lead over the small Kripp into the Prolling high valley. Slightly rolling but generally downhill it goes 10 km to Ybbsitz. In Ybbsitz take the small Ybbstal bike route to Gstadt. There keep left and ride 2 km uphill next to the Ybbstal bike route until the road branches off and goes uphill for 2 km with about 8% gradient. A short descent and then another 1.5 km uphill - the last meters more than 15%. You reach gravel and the Pechtholz chapel from where a very steep descent initially leads towards Opponitz. At the first intersection turn left towards the toboggan hut and over a small counter climb to Opponitz. Arriving in the village, ride to the Bruckwirt and there turn left onto the Ybbstal bike route and return to Hollenstein.
