The hilly region of the Mostviertel is best known for its apples and pears and, of course, its Cider. Only a few people know that there are also such wonderful pilgrimage churches here as the parish church of Krenstetten, Seitenstetten Abbey and Sonntagberg Basilica.
From Aschbach-Markt, this stage of the Sonntagbergweg leads us in a south-westerly direction past Schramelhof and Wipfelhof and after a short hike we reach the small village of Krenstetten with its beautiful pilgrimage church dedicated to St. Mary. Behind the hamlets of Markstein and Bierbaumdorf, we cross the Url river, walk along the railroad tracks for a while and after a short hike reach the so-called "Vierkanter Gottes", the Benedictine monastery of Seitenstetten. Situated in the middle of the Mostviertel hills, the monastery has shaped people, culture and nature for centuries and is home to baroque art treasures as well as a particularly beautiful historic monastery garden with themed gardens and paths (e.g. the "Via Rosa"). We leave Seitenstetten on a narrow road lined with birch trees between the abbey and the abbey garden and then turn left onto a path lined with pear trees. At Hofing, a long ascent to the Blümelsberg (526m) begins. We pass traditional Vierkanter farms, pear trees and a game reserve and enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding landscape. At the Karl-Lammerhuber-Blick (large stone on the side of the path), we enjoy a wonderful view of Biberbach and the gentle hilly landscape of the Mostviertel region before descending and continuing towards Rosenau. In Rosenau, a visit to the Military History Museum is particularly recommended before we start the strenuous ascent to Sonntagberg. At the top, however, we weary pilgrims are amply rewarded for our exertions by the magnificent sight of the Sonntagberg pilgrimage basilica and enjoy the wonderful views.
- Route description From the church, we follow the main road southwest. At the turnoff to the swimming pool, we keep left and follow the Panorama Trail No. 314 to Krenstetten. From here, we continue on the Mostviertel Cycle Route No. 13 to Bierbaumdorf. We pass under the railway line and walk to the right past the airfield until we cross the main road. Via Waasen, we reach Weidersdorf. Shortly after the town sign, we turn left into Lindenstraße. We continue straight, passing the monastery pond towards Seitenstetten Abbey. From the abbey car park, we follow the Most Fruit Hiking Trail 373 to the Franzosenkreuz. There, we keep right and continue along route 373 past Hofing and Steingrub, past the fallow deer enclosure toward Gehartsberg. Shortly before the hamlet, we leave trail 373 and follow the Mostviertel Cycle Route No. 15. After Weingartshof, we cross the road and continue along the cycle path to Riedl, where on the left, we take the hiking trail 382 to Moselberg and shortly after turn right toward Linsberg. From here, we continue to Oismühle, from where we cross the Ybbs to Rosenau. After crossing the federal road and railway line, we first keep left, then follow the street straight ahead after the garages (Ybbsstraße). After about 200 m, we reach the intersection of Waidhofnerstraße and Sonntagbergstraße, cross this, then a slight ascent following the street for about 1 km. After a long left curve, the Pilgrim Path branches off to the right from the street, leading us up to the Sonntagberg pilgrimage basilica.
- Getting there Coming from Salzburg, take the A1 to exit Oed (131) and then continue on L84 to Aschbach-Markt. Coming from Vienna, take the A1 to exit Amstetten-West (123), then continue on B121 and later on B122 to Aschbach-Markt.
- Public transport From Amstetten, we reach Aschbach-Markt by Regional Express (REX) towards St. Valentin.
