Spitz and the Wachau immediately bring to mind lovely wine landscapes and centuries-old stone terraces, noble white wines such as Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, romantic country outings, Heurigen gardens, baroque harvest yards, the Danube, and apricots - and rightly so: on the Spitzer wine walking route, you walk through the most famous Spitzer vineyards, enjoy magnificent views of the Wachau, and immerse yourself in the viticulture and vineyard culture of Spitzer winemakers. The walking route is uniformly marked with wine bottle signs.

Description

The picturesque winemaker town of Spitz lies in the middle of the Wachau, one of the most beautiful river landscapes in the world – the only UNESCO World Heritage site on the Danube. Spitz is also located at the foot of the Jauerling, the highest mountain on the entire Danube (960m) and designated as a nature park. Viticulture has been practiced in and around Spitz for about 2,000 years. The steep vineyards, such as the Tausendeimerberg in the town center, mostly rest on traditional and ecologically valuable dry stone walls and terraces and form the basis for viticulture in and around Spitz. On the Spitzer wine walking route, you will be guided past the stone terraces, the most famous and best vineyards, and their winemakers – always with a magnificent view over Spitz, the Danube, and the Wachau.

safety instructions The path mostly follows easy-to-walk trails (Güterwege), but several times crosses vineyards directly. Sturdy footwear is therefore recommended. Emergency mountain rescue Wachau: 140.

Route description We start at the baroque Spitzer Kirchenplatz. Here at the Kirchenplatz is the start sign with the first signpost, the quality wine bottle. We go left and turn right at Spitz Castle, walk through a gate arch, and pass the castle parking lot. At the end of the street, we already reach the Spitzer vineyards, the shooting range (information board), and turn right. After about 200 m, we reach the threshing floor (information board) and turn left into Rote-Tor-Gasse. At the next intersection, we go right, directly into the vineyard (Rieden Achspoint and Hochrain): in front of us lies the legendary vineyard Singerriedel. At the end of the path, we turn left, directly up to the Red Gate, a fantastic viewpoint and the last remnant of the Spitzer "village wall." We walk in front of the gate (do not go through) down the street (Güterweg) and at the first house, Winery Bracher, turn right (Güterweg) and pass through the Pluris vineyard. After a large loop, we come to a fork where we continue uphill to the right. At the next intersection, we turn left and come to the Hartberg vineyard. We cross the vineyard and leave the paved path at a right curve, going straight ahead. We reach another Güterweg and turn left. After a few minutes, we leave the Güterweg to the right and walk through the Gasslreith vineyard. We take a small right loop and then downhill to the Güterweg Radlbach. Upon reaching this, we turn left and reach after a few hundred meters the district of Radlbach - with Gothic houses. At the end of Radlbach, we reach a crossroads and go left. At the next crossroads, we go left and immediately right into the Hinterweg. Slightly downhill, with a beautiful view towards Singerriedel, we come back to the castle, turn right, and reach the Spitzer Kirchenplatz.
