Steinerne Stube

Route characteristics: 50% asphalt, 50% forest and gravel trails

The approximately 7-kilometer trail to the Steinernen Stube begins at the market square in Großschönau. Head toward Weitra and follow the federal highway. After about 500 m, turn left onto a farm road that runs between house No. 39 and house No. 38 (embroidery shop). Walk uphill along the path and pass a house. At the edge of the forest, follow the path into the woods. Soon you’ll come to the Wünschelrutenweg; turn right and follow it. You’ll come to a small clearing with a shelter. If you look at the tree stump in the middle, you can probably imagine why this tree was called the “Old Beech.” Turn left, deeper into the forest. After passing through a short stretch of thicket, you’ll reach the “Steinernen Stube,” a rock formation of great geomantic significance. But even for the casual observer, there’s plenty to see here.
If you turn left and follow the markers, you’ll walk straight through the forest for about 400 meters to the “Little Stone Parlor.” After exploring the “Stone Parlor,” follow the markers downhill. Turn right and follow the path down the hill until you reach a paved farm road. Keep to the left and follow the farm road. Soon you’ll pass a Swedish cross—one of the last places to take a break. Continue along the farm road until you finally reach the edge of the forest and Großschönau. Keep left to reach the market square.
