Long-distance hiking pleasure "From Nebelstein to Retz". There are around 180 varied kilometers to hike. The cultural landscape is also fascinating: there are numerous castles, monasteries and palaces to discover in the Waldviertel.
This special long-distance hiking trail is varied and attractive for active sports enthusiasts who want to explore the diversity of the Waldviertel landscape. In northern Lower Austria, the plateaus of the Waldviertel meet the lowlands of the Weinviertel. The Nebelstein at the foothills of the Bohemian Forest greets Retz in the Weinviertel. The high moors accompany you to Schrems and Heidenreichstein, the Dobersberg-Thayatal Nature Park and the Thayatal National Park invite you to explore: Thousands of plants and animals have their home here. And around the wine town of Retz, it is the vineyards and wine cellar lanes that make hiking a pleasure.
The routes are not too strenuous and the natural landscape makes up for the stamina required. The journey is the reward. The river has created its own little world in the Thayatal. Respectable cliffs alternate with gentle, densely wooded slopes, wild riverbanks bear witness to the power of the water. If you are very lucky and quiet on your feet, you might spot one of the wild cats that have found a new home in the untouched forests. (There is an enclosure in the National Park House where you can safely see the wildcats). At some point you reach the legendary Umlaufberg, which is almost completely surrounded by the Thaya. The hiker can see just how much from the very top: If there wasn't a narrow band of rock at the narrow point of this loop, the Thaya would flow smoothly in circles!
