Description
Along the old town wall, the route leads towards Mörterteich through a small settlement in the Saaß, and interesting rock formations such as the Hutstein and the Teufelstein can be admired on the way to Schandachen. On the Teufelstein you can clearly see the traces of the claws left by the Höllenfurst! The way back leads through the Waldviertel countryside, including next to the golf course, down to Herrensee lake.
- safety instructions Route characteristics: 40% asphalt, 60% forest and meadow pathsMake sure when choosing the route that it suits your fitness level. Check whether the gastronomy establishments you want to visit along the way are open. Pack your mobile phone and maps in your backpack.
- Equipment Sturdy footwear, functional clothing, sun and rain protection, maps, if necessary telescopic poles, first aid kit (blister plasters), sufficient provisions (snack, muesli bars, fruit, water).
- Route description First right at Herrensee, then along the city wall past Mörterteich leads the path through a small settlement into a short forest. After crossing Schandacher Street, continue left after 100 meters to Saaßer Street, then right past small farms and houses. Again right through the forest, we reach the Hat Stone, and then the Devil's Stone. Next, go to Schandachen, where opposite the fire station the path leads between stables and barns out into the open field. Along the cattle pasture, we walk towards the forest, cross the small dam, then immediately turn right into the high forest. On the forest road, we keep right and after a few minutes, we find ourselves back on Saaßer Street, which we follow to the left. Shortly after the "Three Brothers" resting place, a field path branches off to the right. Through the forest to Hörmannser Street, then steeply down at the edge of the golf course to Herrensee. Here you have the choice: go left to shorten your hike by about 40 minutes, right to make a full circuit around Herrensee.
- Parking Free parking at the town square as well as park & ride facility nearby
- Public transport By bus from Göpfritz or Gmünd to Litschau. Especially recommended is also the journey from Gmünd to Litschau with the nostalgic Waldviertel Railway.
- Editor’s tip "Pay" and "Play" is the motto of the Herrensee Golf Club! At the 18-hole compact course, you need neither equipment nor membership. Just give it a try!
