Hiking tour Starting from Brunn am Gebirge
Brunn am Gebirge* – Maria Enzersdorf – Hinterbrühl – Heiligenkreuz
From Brunn am Gebirge train station, the path leads via Enzersdorferstraße to Maria Enzersdorf. After passing the Franciscan Church (pilgrimage church "Maria Healing of the Sick"), turn right into Mariazellergasse. Passing the former Pfandl Fountain, you reach Liechtensteinstraße, where you turn left to the park of Hunyadi Castle and diagonally opposite you see the "Schiffersäule", the oldest pilgrimage monument on the way to Mariazell. At the end of Liechtensteinstraße, you meet a Mariazell votive image donated by Emperor Ferdinand on Johannesstraße, which leads you to the Urlaubskreuz Chapel (01:00 h). This has always been an important reference point for Mariazell pilgrims. The path now goes downhill to the Seegrotte and through Hinterbrühl (01:00 h). At Höldrichsmühle, turn onto a forest path leading into the Mödlingbach valley, where you walk partly beside the road and partly on hiking trails to Gaaden (01:45 h). From Gaaden's Jakob Church, follow the right side of the road west to Gaaden's Calvary Hill. After this, the path continues a short stretch along the road and crosses it southwards. The pilgrimage route now goes over fields and through the forest towards Siegenfeld and past the "White Cross" to Heiligenkreuz. Over the baroque Calvary Hill, you reach the abbey (02:15 h).
* Historically, the Via Sacra begins in Vienna at Paulaner Church. It formerly ran via Spinnerin am Kreuz through the Vienna Woods to Heiligenkreuz and onwards to Mariazell.
