Description
The varied route via the Vogelbergsteig to the historic Dürnstein castle ruins is one of the most beautiful hiking routes in the Wachau.
During the ascent, hikers enjoy an impressive panoramic view of Dürnstein and the surrounding landscape. Worth seeing viewpoints are the protruding rock pulpit of the Vogelberg (546 m) and the Starhembergwarte (564 m) at the summit of the Schlossberg. The key to the lookout is available at the Fesslhütte.
The ascent to the Vogelbergsteig is interesting due to the many different sections of the trail, but challenging due to the relatively steep gradient. The last third leads through rocks and over a granite slab with scree and is well secured with wire rope and chains. For safety reasons, the Vogelbergsteig is not accessible in snowy and icy conditions.
