The 17th stage of the Wiener Alpenbogen trail (WAB) leads through mixed forest over the saddle to Purbach. It resembles a landscape painting from the Biedermeier period. A special highlight of this stage is the Myra Falls.

Description

"Mira" means beautiful! The Myra Falls are an impressive natural spectacle of bizarre rocks, water cascades, and crystal-clear reservoirs at the foot of the Hausstein. Here is the Hausstein lookout, inviting you to linger and enjoy. At the Jagasitz inn, there is the Kreuth lookout, where you can enjoy the view and relax. Every stone, path, and bridge is designed with special care and knowledge of harmony in nature. Small bridges lead over babbling streams, past bubbling waterfalls, and through cooling forests – a true fairy-tale landscape with many mystical and legendary places to discover.

Please therefore observe the following:Preparation Make sure when choosing the route that it matches your mountain experience and your fitness. Inform yourself in advance about the weather forecast. Weather in the mountains can change surprisingly fast. Therefore, always start out appropriately equipped (e.g., rain protection).Check if the huts and snack stations you want to visit are open. Inform someone about your route choice and planned return before you start.
Equipment Always take suitable maps with you. Put on sturdy shoes adapted to the route, bring sun and rain protection as well as water and a snack. Take your mobile phone with you and save the emergency number of mountain rescue: 140
Route description We start the stage of the Wiener Alpenbogen through the Biedermeier Valley at the Pernitz-Muggendorf train station. Coming from the tracks, we turn left at the station building, pass the fire station, and reach the federal road. Continuing westwards, we pass the cemetery and turn right into Urhausstraße opposite the Pernitz-Raimundviertel train station. Signposts lead us out of the settlement; shortly after the town sign there is a water fountain to remind those who forgot to fill their water bottles.We walk along Blättertalstraße, learn about Ferdinand Raimund's skull, and after 15 minutes turn right at a small chapel. Passing the earth's center and a sculpture garden, we enter a pasture and climb a rugged path uphill to the right in front of a newly built house. Signposts and red markings steadily lead us uphill through the shady forest to a small hill with a memorial cross in the woods.After a short drink break, we hike downhill on the marked footpath to the Purbach. We cross the bridge and now walk the asphalt road slightly downhill to Muggendorf. Keep left, cross the bridge, and continue to the signposted Myra Falls. Shortly before the entrance, we cross a parking lot and enter the Myra Falls (conservation fee of €3.50 for adults, €1 for children). We follow the cascades of the Myra Falls over footbridges and stairs and enjoy the natural monument in its full glory. At the upper end of the wild waterfalls, signposts lead us away from the water to the Wiener Alpenbogen, and we ascend left to the Hausstein meadow. A detour to the Hausstein lookout allows us to gaze as far as Schneeberg.We cross the Hausstein meadow at the northern edge and follow the hiking trail downhill to the Karnerwirt inn (closed Tuesday in July & August, closed Tuesday & Wednesday between Easter and All Saints' Day). We go right to the reservoir pond, shortly before crossing the Myra brook and the main road. We continue towards Kreuth and the Jagasitz inn along the farm road, passing a public toilet. After a few minutes, we leave the road at information boards about pitch extraction and hike gently uphill on a forest path. First ascending, then somewhat flatter and leisurely, we hike over meadows and forest to the Kreuth saddle with the Jagasitz inn.After a break, we hike beside the chapel on the gravel road towards Waxeneckhaus. We cross an enclosure, follow the red-marked paths, and arrive at the Schneerosenhaus “Auf dem Hals”. We cross the pass height directly and continue uphill on the gravel road. Going slightly downhill again, we turn at house no. 10 onto the private road to Waxeneckhaus. We reach today's accommodation after a 20-minute ascent. At Waxeneckhaus, old tools from the pitch extraction era can be viewed.
Parking Parking is available at the Pernitz municipal office.
Getting there Coming from Vienna or Graz via the A2, exit the highway at the Wöllersdorf exit and follow the signage on B21 to Pernitz.

Editor’s tip You can stop and stay overnight at the Waxeneck hut. (Note: Overnight stays are not possible on Monday & Tuesday!)Allow enough time for visiting the Myra Falls. A small conservation fee must be paid when walking through the water cascades. Alternatively, accommodation is also available at the Karnerwirt inn.
