Fish ponds, bathing ponds, forests, meadows, nature park, monastery, castle, a mother-of-pearl turnery and the Reblausexpress - the leisure tour leads through almost 60 kilometers of varied Waldviertel adventure.
Varied landscapes, cultural highlights and water fun with swimming or fishing - the Waldviertel leisure tour leads past many excursion destinations that invite you to take a well-deserved break.
Make sure the route you choose matches your fitness level. Check if the gastronomy businesses you want to visit on the way are open. Pack your mobile phone and maps in your backpack.
Since the cycle path is not continuously paved, we recommend avoiding racing bikes and using a trekking, gravel, or mountain bike.
Suitable starting points for the Waldviertler leisure route are Niederfladnitz, Pleißing, Langau, or Geras. The route is described starting from Geras in a clockwise direction. You can park, for example, at Edlersee, which also promises a refreshing cool-down after the tour. From the parking lot, cycle a short distance along the federal road past the nature park before turning right through the town. The Geras abbey and the Schüttkasten invite you to get off your bike.
Heading north, the route continues via Kottaun to Langau. Between Langau and Riegersburg, you cycle past the Langau leisure center, a popular excursion destination and a worthwhile stop. Via Riegersburg, the tour takes us along the Kamp-Thaya-March cycle path to Felling, where the mother-of-pearl manufactory invites you to visit. A hilly section follows on a lightly trafficked country road via Mallersbach to Heufurth before the tour continues via field paths to Pleißing. Now you have the choice to either cycle via the roundabout to Waschbach and make a loop via Niederfladnitz or to shorten the route and cycle through the town southwards towards Fronsburg. In Pleißing, the inn Zum Thayatal is available for a break.
From Fronsburg, the path leads through a valley along the Reblausexpress railway line, an experience train that runs on weekends between Retz and Drosendorf. On the way to Hessendorf, the tour runs directly through the anglers’ paradise, where many anglers gather and a tavern invites you to stop. Via Oberhöflein and a climb through a forested area, you reach the two villages Trautmannsdorf and Fugnitz before returning to Geras via well-developed farm roads.
There are enough public parking spaces in every town. If you are coming from Horn, you can park at Edlersee in Geras. If coming from Retz, the entry point at Pleißing near the Hardegg municipal office is recommended.
If you want to arrive with your bikes in tow, it is recommended to travel by train to Retz. From Retz station, you cycle on the Reblausexpress cycle path to the entry point at Niederfladnitz (6 km).
Take your time, as there is really a lot to discover!
