The shorter Walpurgis walk is a leisurely hike around Grafenschlag into the Purzelkamptal valley to the Haushof, through woods and meadows to the Ödkreuzung crossroads.
Grafenschlag lies at an average altitude of 800 m above sea level. The transition from the gneiss to the granite zone is strikingly recognizable in the landscape. Special features include the legendary Guttenberg with its mighty rock faces, the idyllic landscape pond, St. Martin's Church and the pillory. The Grafenschlag wind farm, now with six wind turbines, is visible from afar.
Make sure when choosing your route that it matches your fitness level. Check if the restaurants and inns you want to visit along the way are open. Pack your charged mobile phone and map material in your backpack. For cross-border routes always carry a passport or identity card.
Sturdy footwear, functional clothing, sun and rain protection, map material, if necessary telescopic poles, first aid kit (blister plasters), sufficient provisions (snack, muesli bars, fruit, water).
The leisurely Walpurgis walking route begins at the marketplace. You follow the path westward, passing the church on the left, straight ahead. In the forest, at the crossroads, choose the left path, which soon leads out of the forest again. Here you immediately spot Haushof, where an information board recalls the farmer uprisings of 1597. Then continue left back to Grafenschlag. From the town entrance, use the sidewalk until you come back onto the marketplace via the alley next to the playground.
Coming from St. Pölten take S33 to Krems, continue on B37, turn left after Gföhl towards Reittern, via Lichtenau in Waldviertel, Grainbrunn and Lugendorf to Grafenschlag.
Coming from Vienna take A22 and S5 to Krems, continue on B37, turn left after Gföhl towards Reittern, via Lichtenau in Waldviertel, Grainbrunn and Lugendorf to Grafenschlag.
Coming from the west take A1 to Linz, A7 and B124 to Ritterkamp, via Roiten on B36, then B36 to Grafenschlag.
Mystical site at Guttenberg with rock formations (sacrificial stones) and a good viewpoint
The leisurely Walpurgis walking route can be complemented in the town center, the main square in Grafenschlag, by the new themed path "Lost Crafts," which presents interesting information about now extinct professions on display boards. Furthermore, fans of farm-direct marketing can find some specialties a little off the walking route – but easily accessible – in the Hausmühle and Marktmühle, as well as in the self-service shop called Schmankerl Hittn, where a community of many direct-selling businesses offers their products.
