Description

The cycle tour starts at Vienna Central Station, the route "Laxenburg Radweg" / "EuroVelo9" passes Südtiroler Platz subway station (approx. 100 m to the left of the main exit); from there the route leads slightly downhill via Argentinierstraße to Karlsplatz.

After 2.3 kilometers, turn onto the ring cycle path (Ringstraße/Kärntner Ring) before Schwarzenbergplatz, then past the opera, Heldenplatz and Burgtheater; leave the ring cycle path (Schottenring, now Weinviertel Radweg/EuroVelo 9) at Franz-Josefs-Kai (5.7 km), continue left on the cycle path along the Danube Canal to Nordsteg (9.9 km); From there continue westwards, after 8.5 km join the Danube cycle path at Heiligenstadt (10.8 km); now on the Danube cycle path and thus along the Danube past the Kuchelau marina to Klosterneuburg (15 km).

In the Klosterneuburg area, the route leads away from the main river, often through floodplain areas; at Greifenstein, the route leads back to the Danube; mostly on the embankment, the route leads up to the finish of the day's stage in Tulln (39 km).

Landscape and nature

In the metropolitan ambience of Vienna, the Danube gradually dominates the scenic surroundings with the Kuchelau marina and the floodplain area of Klosterneuburg; where the Danube Cycle Path joins the route, Wiener Porte marks the northern edge of the Vienna Woods.rdlich edge of the Vienna Woods with Leopoldsberg and Bisamberg; in Kritzendorf the route is back on the Danube, first with the oxbow lake of Greifenstein, then directly as a river; to Tulln; at St. Andrä/Wördern, the Vienna Woods are abruptly abandoned.

Mixed traffic

Hardly any problems, as the cycle paths are largely separated; only the start section to Karlsplatz is on Argentinierstraße, which is not very busy; a little caution is required on the Ringradweg, as there are many cyclists on the road here; the exit from Vienna upstream to the west is easy.

Gradients

Apart from a few meters (ascents etc.) there are virtually no gradients.
