Description
Herbal medicine is as old as mankind and there is hardly an ailment for which Mother Nature has not come up with a little herb. SONNENTOR - the herbs & spices specialist from the Waldviertel region takes you into the world of herbs: Hike along the approximately 3.5 km long, educational herb trail between Sprögnitz and Engelbrechts through a beautiful part of the Waldviertel and let yourself be accompanied by 16 display boards with the cultural history of herbal knowledge, myths and traditions, famous personalities and beautiful pictures.
- safety instructions Make sure when choosing your route that it matches your fitness level. Check whether the catering businesses you want to visit along the way are open. Pack your charged mobile phone and maps in your backpack. For cross-border routes, always carry a passport or identity card.
- Equipment Sturdy footwear, functional clothing, sun and rain protection, map material, if necessary telescopic poles, first aid kit (blister plasters), sufficient provisions (snack, muesli bars, fruit, water).
- Route description The knowledge about the power and benefits of herbs is as old as the cultural history of humanity. Excavations from the Neolithic period have revealed remnants of poppy and caraway. The first written documents date back to the 4th millennium BC. Egyptians, Chinese, and Indians already had extensive herbal knowledge back then. The Bible also provides clues about the power of herbs, which have always been an essential part of religious festivals. The entire hike is entertaining and exciting for the whole family! You start at the SONNENTOR experience and walk up the street. At the Löschteich (beach volleyball court) follow the yellow signs through the forest. A highlight of this route is the climb to the Auberg lookout tower. Located in the middle of the dense Waldviertel forest at an elevation of 811 meters, 130 steps lead to the 23.40-meter-high viewing platform (tower height 27.55 m). You will be rewarded with a magnificent view far beyond the Waldviertel – all the way to Schneeberg and Ötscher! In the summer half-year, in addition to the Celtic tree calendar, various dragon figures also line the path. From the Auberg lookout tower, the path leads you to Großgöttfritz, Reichers, and via Rohrenreith back to Sprögnitz. The route is easy, with only slight elevation, and passes through a beautiful part of the Waldviertel.
- Getting there By car on the A 22 and S 5 to Krems, on the B 37 via Gföhl to Zwettl, turn left before Zwettl - on the state road to Sprögnitz.
- Editor’s tip As a souvenir of your hike on the Wild Herb Trail in the Waldviertel, you can get a hiking badge from SONNENTOR in the SONNENTOR shop.
