Willendorf became famous for the discovery of the world-famous 25,000-year-old fertility statue "Venus of Willendorf". We hike from the enchanting "Venusium" museum along the Willendorf stream through forests past the "Wetterkreuz". Between vineyards and apricot orchards, we walk along the Wachau Railway on beautiful meadow paths via the famous site where the "Venus of Willendorf" was found back to the "Venusium". The hiking trail (no. 23) is uniformly signposted with yellow signs throughout.

Description
Willendorf became famous for the discovery of the world-famous 25,000-year-old fertility statue "Venus of Willendorf". We hike from the enchanting "Venusium" museum along the Willendorf stream through forests past the "Wetterkreuz". Between vineyards and apricot orchards, we walk along the Wachau Railway on beautiful meadow paths via the famous site where the "Venus of Willendorf" was found back to the "Venusium". The hiking trail (no. 23) is uniformly signposted with yellow signs throughout.

- Route description At the beginning of Willendorf, we start our approximately five km long hike heading north straight to the inn "Zur Venus." Here we turn left and after ten meters right again. Now we have arrived at the "Venusium" (222 m), a charming museum of the Paleolithic Age. Here we go straight under the Wachaubahn and then follow a small paved road that shortly after the last houses turns into a forest path. We continue straight parallel to the Willendorf stream. Along the way, rock formations and old abandoned stone terraces and former vineyards appear, where we can often observe emerald lizards in the sun.Eventually, we turn right towards the stream and cross it. From here, the hike goes uphill. The forest repeatedly opens the view to the Danube and the impressive Aggstein ruin on the opposite bank of the Danube. Where the apricot orchards start again, there is a bench to rest. Here the path divides into a Y-shape, and we take the left path uphill, where after three minutes we can turn right to the "Weather Cross." Returning from the Weather Cross, we go right downhill on the main path. At the next large intersection in the forest, we follow the path to the right again. At the following junction, we go left and then always downhill on the main path until we come to a clearing. Here apricot and vineyard orchards and flower meadows begin again. From here, we have an impressive view of the medieval village Schwallenbach and St. Johann on the right Danube bank.We follow the path in a right curve down to the Wachaubahn and turn right before it onto a beautiful meadow path that leads us through vineyards and apricot orchards. One last small ascent leads us right uphill to the site of the "Venus of Willendorf" along with a resting place. Over a few steps, we come back to the small paved road, go left under the Wachaubahn, past the "Venusium," and back to the starting point.
