In 2019, Katharina C. Herzog and David Leitner initiated the multi-award-winning art project Würmlas Wände - urban art on rural facades in the market town of Würmla (Tulln district) in Lower Austria. The motifs were created in collaboration with the owners of the walls and tell personal stories about the villagers of Würmla: Their life in the countryside, their wishes and worries, what occupies and moves them.

The market town of Würmla is located in Lower Austria, approx. 60 km west of Vienna and unites 15 small villages, from Haspelwald to Windleiten, situated between gentle hills and dense forests.
Würmla's Walls are located in ten of these villages. A circular hiking trail connects them and offers an insight into the beauty of nature in the Mostviertel region.

- Route description Schloss Würmla - Pöding APHRODITE (No. 1)1 kmFrom the parking lot at Schloss Würmla, walk through the castle park surrounded by giant trees towards Pöding. A gravel field path leads us directly to the first artwork titled APHRODITE on a grain silo of a pig fattening operation. APHRODITE, the goddess of fertility, reflects the importance of women in agriculture at this operation.Pöding APHRODITE (No. 1) - Anzing MARKENSCHWEIN (No. 2)3.1 kmWe continue walking along the state road to the next village, Anzing. We pass by the beautifully renovated village chapel, walk along the village street towards the forest. The yellow-marked hiking route "Würmlas Wände" leads us through a forest section. The beautiful view that opens up after the forest lets us immerse ourselves in the gentle forest and hilly landscape of Würmla. We take the right turn and after a short downhill stretch already recognize the second artwork on a free-standing pig fattening farm surrounded by green fields. The MARKENSCHWEIN of Anzing. How much are we willing to pay for one of the depicted brands? Do we question the meaningfulness of international brands? And what value does regional quality meat, which we supply to our body, have for us? An artwork that makes us think.Anzing MARKENSCHWEIN (No. 2) - Waltendorf PLAYING GIRLS (No. 3)2.2 kmWe continue on field paths towards Waltendorf and philosophize about brands and domestic agriculture and their importance. After reaching the highest point of the field path, a unique view opens up to the beautiful village of Waltendorf, nestled in Traisental vineyards and dense forests. We walk past a wayside shrine on the right towards the village, where the yellow hiking signs lead us to the next artwork. Somewhat hidden, we discover the PLAYING GIRLS on a house wall in the charming village. The origin of the story of the PLAYING GIRLS goes back to World War II.Waltendorf PLAYING GIRLS (No. 3) - Mittermoos YOU WIN, YOU LOSE (No. 4), RABBIT BREEDING (No. 5)1.8 kmThe route leads past the chapel of Waltendorf, left uphill through the vineyards. At the top, we find a nice village bench inviting us to rest. Then we continue through hidden meadows back to the village street that shows us the way to the next artwork. On the right, we walk further on the country road, leave the village, and hike to the turnoff to Mittermoos. An asphalt path soon opens the view to the two artworks YOU WIN, YOU LOSE and RABBIT BREEDING, which have breathed new life into two aging cider cellars. Ask the people from the village what story is behind these artworks. Because talking brings people together...Mittermoos YOU WIN, YOU LOSE (No. 4), RABBIT BREEDING (No. 5) - Holzleiten GIRL WITH BAG AND PACK (No. 6)1 kmWe rest on the cozy bench next to the cellars in Mittermoos and continue energetically through the village of Mittermoos, crossing a small bridge under which the Moosbach flows. Then we reach the chapel of Mittermoos at the intersection to Holzleiten. Shortly after, we discover in the next village the GIRL WITH BAG AND PACK, a large mural on a small house. "My ancestors were Sudeten Germans; they were refugees." We read the story on the beautifully designed information board directly in front of the mural.Holzleiten GIRL WITH BAG AND PACK (No. 6) - Grub SET TABLE (No. 7)3.2 kmThe path goes through the small cadastral community Holzleiten and a piece of farm road to the highest point of the hiking route at an elevation of 291 meters after just half a kilometer and a slight incline.Now, for about 1.5 km along the forest edge, mostly level to slightly downhill, a wonderful south-facing panorama accompanies you.Intertwined fields with small villages and forests up to Würmla with its beautifully embedded church in the center delight the eyes, caressed by the gentle, warm rays of the evening sun. Several benches invite you to linger, to let your gaze wander through the beautiful hilly landscape and look down into the Würmla valley. "When I stand at the forest edge and look down into the valley, there lies my Würmla, my home town..." goes a traditional Würmla song.At the end of the panoramic part of the path, a state road leads a little over a kilometer, accompanied by forest and fields with a view into the Tullnerfeld to Grub.Grub SET TABLE (No. 7) - Diendorf WEAPON WHEEL (No. 8)2.7 km"If you have more than you absolutely need, then don't build walls, but a bigger table": We admire the magnificent and large mural impressively on the wall of a large barn titled SET TABLE. The path continues on the state road. This section is very suitable for cyclists. After field and paved paths, past the Westbahn railway, we reach Diendorf's WEAPON WHEEL. The life story of the wall owners inspired this artwork and also aims to point to the fast-paced time we live in today. Here, resting at the Jakobs fountain with drinking water quality is a good idea. We fill our water bottles and rest on the cosy Jakobsplatz. The signs indicated that we have just completed a part of the Jakobsweg (Way of St. James).Diendorf WEAPON WHEEL (No. 8) - Egelsee LOCAL RESIDENTS (No. 9)2.8 kmWe return on the paved road towards field paths, where we pass a hidden forest section with unused cider cellars. Further, through a green, forest-surrounded sleepy valley, we walk between fields towards Egelsee. We follow the signs until we arrive at the beginning of Egelsee. A lovingly maintained village street leads us directly to the beautiful chapel of Egelsee, where we discover the impressive artwork titled LOCAL RESIDENTS to the left. The five detailed and beautifully designed portraits by the artist transform this unused area into a kind of open-air gallery. We want to learn more about the story behind this artwork. At www.wurmlaswalls.com we find out more.Egelsee LOCAL RESIDENTS (No. 9) - Jetzing SAMOVAR (No. 10), TOMATO PLANT (No. 11)1.2 kmThe hiking arrow points us to the next artworks SAMOVAR and TOMATO PLANT. We hike to the outskirts of Egelsee, where we reach a field path leading us to Jetzing in about 15 minutes. A small village is home to the next two artistically designed cider cellars. The story of the TOMATO PLANT represents the family of one of the two artists and initiators of Würmlas Wände. On closer inspection, it is clear that the plant not only bears tomatoes – between its stems, other fruits also grow. Four, to be exact. These fruits symbolically represent the children of the family: Physalis, raspberry, currant, and cherry. The four fruits are as different as the children themselves. The story of the SAMOVAR is read on the handcrafted stand with an information sign attached.Jetzing SAMOVAR (No. 10), TOMATO PLANT (No. 11) - Gumperding MILKMAN (No. 12), IRON WEIGHTS (No. 13)1.2 kmWe walk through the small village of Jetzing and continue straight on the paved state road to Gumperding. Right at the village entrance, we see the next artwork MILKMAN, which reflects the history of the former dairy farmers to today's landfill. In this village, there is a second artwork of Würmlas Wände. We walk a few more minutes into the village and turn right uphill until we reach a small scale house. The artwork titled IRON WEIGHTS is still in operation for weighing grain and also points to changes in agriculture: "Only large businesses can survive...".Gumperding MILKMAN (No. 12), IRON WEIGHTS (No. 13) - Pöding APHRODITE (No. 1)2.2 kmWe continue walking through the village and turn sharply left. Passing the local blacksmith, we continue along a field path at the forest edge. We follow the yellow hiking signs and enjoy a beautiful panorama of meadows, villages, and the church tower of Würmla. Soon we reach Pöding. We walk through the small village on a hill where the Pöding APHRODITE reigns. This artwork closes the Würmlas Wände circular hiking trail and leads us back to the starting point in Würmla.
