Altenburg
Welcome to Altenburg!
The municipality of Altenburg was created by merging the two municipalities of Altenburg and Fuglau and now comprises five villages: Altenburg, Burgerwiesen, Fuglau, Mahrersdorf and Steinegg.
Founded in 1144, the Benedictine monastery of Altenburg is regarded as the Baroque jewel of the Waldviertel, but has had another attraction to offer visitors since the archaeological excavations in 1994:
2 monasteries in one place - the Baroque monastery and the Old Monastery below.
The monastery as we know it today dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries and is a jewel of Baroque architecture. Since the early 1960s, the monastery has been home to choirboys who represent our homeland with their musical performances not only in Austria but also abroad.
Visit the "Benedictines in the heart of Europe", experience the more than 850-year history of Altenburg Abbey and embark on a journey into the past. Find peace and quiet in the gardens of the abbey!
