Altmelon

Wooded hiking mecca between rock and moor: Altmelon is an old Kuenringer settlement that was first mentioned in 1259. The market town in the Zwettl district lies on the edge of the extensive Weinsberg Forest with its ancient woodland. Together with the municipalities of Arbesbach, Groß Gerungs, Langschlag and Rappottenstein, Altmelon forms the Waldviertler Hochland.

The Meloner Au, one of the most beautiful and interesting upland moor areas between the Waldviertel and Mühlviertel, is still a primeval Waldviertel landscape - and is recognized as a nature reserve due to its rare flora and fauna. The "hikeable" area at 900 meters above sea level is characterized by dense forests, mystical moors and granite formations.

Altmelon: rich in stone & washed with many waters

Due to the high amount of rock, the Waldviertel municipality is often jokingly referred to as "stone-rich". There are also particularly idyllic bodies of water here: the Kleine Kamp has its source in the Weinberg Forest. The Klausteich is also known as a former alluvial pond.

The most beautiful sights & events in Altmelon

There is a lot to discover on a vacation or day trip in Altmelon: The parish church of St. James combines several historical architectural styles. A tip for families is the farmer's museum - with everyday and work utensils as well as machines from times gone by. The friendly village is also known for its annual church festival.
