Marktgemeinde Japons
Japons in the district of Horn presents itself as a sustainable and lovable Waldviertel market town. The municipality includes the villages of Japons, Goslarn, Oberthumeritz and Unterthumeritz as well as Sabatenreith, Schweinburg, Wenjapons and Zettenreith.
The stately baroque parish church of Japons hl. Laurenz and several local chapels as well as three listed wayside shrines are part of the landscape. Other sights that are ideal for hiking include the old Haidlmühle mill near Schweinburg with its own power station, the Florianibründl - a pilgrimage chapel at a spring of healing water - and a historic lime kiln in Unterthumeritz.
Japons: Historical facts
Japons was first mentioned in a document in 1336, but finds from the Neolithic period prove that the area was settled much earlier. In the 19th and early 20th century, the area was primarily known for its quarries: Thumeritz marble was extracted here. Today, Japons is considered a forward-looking bioenergy village - with a biogas plant and wind farm.
Japons theme trail: an energy-packed hike
The Japons energy trail starts at Gerhard's Wiazhaus. It runs as a circular route via various themed stations - such as the water playground or the wood energy and energy-saving site.
