Marktgemeinde Amaliendorf - Aalfang

The Waldviertel market town of Amaliendorf-Aalfang is located in the district of Gmünd. Sports such as soccer and tennis are very popular in this active village. For holidaymakers, the community close to nature is an ideal starting point for excursions to the surrounding area - such as to the Schrems high moor nature park, Heidenreichstein or the Waldviertel Art Museum.

Amaliendorf-Aalfang: stony ground with a long history

Amaliendorf-Aalfang lies in the middle of the Bohemian Massif. The landscape is therefore characterized by granite. The sometimes bizarre and fascinating rock formations and wobbly stones are typical of the region.

The unusual place name is derived from the fact that weirs were built here in the 17th century to catch eels. On the other hand, Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria was the patron saint of a place founded by her highest court master. Finally, in 1967, the two villages of Aalfang and Amaliendorf were merged.
